Pandemic Panic

Time to talk about Panic. Especially the politics of panic. What does the word ‘panic’ mean? All that and more in The-Politics-Of-Panic-Bob Davis Podcast 910.

Fourth Podcast About Coronavirus

First of all this is the fourth in a series of podcasts on Coronavirus.

If It Bleeds…It Leads

I certainly did not intend to do a series on Coronavirus. However it’s rise to an official pandemic is most noteworthy.

Ladies and Gentlemen, if it bleeds it leads.

Four Podcasts Anticipating Current Events

Even more these podcasts have anticipated effects in the markets.

Right now the questions are, how bad will it get and what will the political effects be.

Enter the word ‘Panic’

If you are interested in real statistics regarding the spread of Covid-19 you believe ‘fake’ news.

Try to prepare by doing something you think might help your family? Panic.

Moreover media covering the story are automatically guilty of panic if they don’t parrot the party line, which apparently is this is not very serious.

In addition statements made from the White House in an attempt to damp down concern are often contradicted almost immediately.

Blame Everyone

Blame the media. Or China. Say the democrats are making a big deal out of this.

Blame the president for his off the cuff style and colorful language.

He blames CNN and the previous president.

Let’s not forget social media because it brings out the worst human instincts at times like these.

This Ain’t No Party

Finally one wonders whether we are truly panicking.

This Ain’t No Disco

Selling stock because the market is going down isn’t necessarily panic.

This Ain’t No Time For Fooling Around

Buying toilet paper may seem silly but it hardly qualifies as panic.

Measured And Careful Response

In conclusion Covid-19 is now a worldwide pandemic. That is officially a serious problem.

It’s reasonable to suggest a serious problem requires a measured and careful response that doesn’t minimize, spin, or denigrate people who are concerned about it.

Economic and Political Effects Snowballing

A measured and careful response is even more important as economic effects snowball and markets are effected.

I don’t think people trust the government anymore.

Can you blame them?

Oh right…you can!

Radio’s Unique Museum

I worked in radio for years. Radio is still my first love despite podcasting for ten years now. Most noteworthy in this podcast is a visit to a unique museum. Learn more in Top40-Radio-Museum-Roadtrip-Bob Davis Podcast 881.

Top 40’s Roots

Top Forty radio’s roots are in the mid south and deep south. Now there’s a shrine to top forty radio in Chattanooga Tennessee. Even more, there’s also a working radio station there visitors can tour.

Small and Medium Markets

Especially relevant to the roots of top forty radio in the south, are the many small and medium markets in this region that spawned some of America’s great radio talent.

When Radio Was The Only Game In Town

First of all in the 1950’s, 1960’s, and most of the 1970’s there was no Internet, no social media, no cable television and no way for a generation to communicate except for radio. I’ll explain in In Top40-Radio-Museum-Roadtrip-Bob Davis Podcast 881.

Building Companies and Lives

Second, operators and employees of these radio stations in growing small and medium markets across the country could build companies and lives on the profits.

All About The Music

Above all the music made top forty radio and radio itself a phenomenon.

A One Off Moment In History

The events and situations that made all of that possible will certainly never happen again.

A slice of Architectural History Too

Furthermore during that period of time some of the most successful AM top forty stations were housed near their transmitters. Many in neighborhoods and developments.

Most Are Already Gone

Low slung period brick buildings and mid century architecture and furnishings were the order of the day. Most of those old stations are gone.

This Place Remains And It’s Worth Seeing

In contrast WFLI AM and FM remain exactly as it was through the 1960’s and 70’s, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Fun Fun Fun

Finally my friend and I took a tour and spent an afternoon remembering how much fun radio used to be. Thanks again to the National Top Forty Radio Hall of Fame and Museum.

In Top40-Radio-Museum-Roadtrip-Bob Davis Podcast 881 you’ll hear the story of the radio station and more.

Winter Is Here…Already

I think it’s time to talk about a more reflective season. Winter is here in Minnesota. Even though it’s only Veterans Day, it’s winter. More time spent reading, streaming TV and more. We’ll talk about it in Human-Nature-Progress-Random-Thoughts-Bob Davis Podcast 875.

Two Recent Podcasts Highlighted

First of all I have to start with a review of my two recent podcasts with Congressman Tom Emmer. You can listen to them here and here. At one point in posting content on social media, I mentioned those two podcasts would be impossible on the radio today.

Mission Of The Bob Davis Podcasts

Moreover it reminds of me the mission of the Bob Davis Podcasts these days. Especially relevant is the need to say, and say again, I am not driven by wanting to be in a specific political or social construct.

Biggest Problem In Media Today

In addition it is necessary for me to say not only do I not want to be a ‘this or that’, I think the biggest problem in media today is most of the commentators, reporters, and so called analysts seem to need and want to come from a partisan perspective.

Some People Need Acceptance…Apparently

I think it is the wanting, even more the need to be accepted by some group. Learn more in Human-Nature-Progress-Random-Thoughts-Bob Davis Podcast 875.

Playing To The Crowd

Furthermore playing to an audience adds to the problem.

Say What We Want To Hear

Audiences expect content creators to say certain things. To defend or attack to shore up expectations. To say what they want to hear.

Not My Mission

Of course this is not my mission. My mission is to progress. To be decidedly unpredictable. To refuse a side. Ask questions. Advance the story. Artists progress, sometimes to the dismay of their audiences. Think Picasso, or even Elton John’s changes in style critics did not necessarily liike.

Don’t Follow. Lead!

Sometimes you have to lead the audience.

Human Progress?

I also thought a lot recently about human consciousness. Whether we are making progress. You hear a lot of talk these days about how much progress human beings are supposedly making.

You’ll have to listen to the podcast to get an idea of what I think.

Confusion

Finally the question of the progress of human consciousness leads me to wonder how we got where we are today. So much confusion about who’s right and wrong, what direction works, failing institutions and new ideas.

From Podcasts To The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald In This Podcast

Therefore it is a fitting random discussion that takes us from recent podcasts to The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald, the role of artists, and more.

I had a lot of fun with this one.
