Podcasting Life and Business After Four Years-Podcast 622

What’s it like to support yourself as a podcaster? I looked up the other day and asked, “How long have I been doing this?” 2009 was the actual start date. I’ve been in business supporting myself as a podcaster exclusively since 2013. Learned a lot of lessons in that time. It seems like I’ve been in business a lot longer than nearly four years. Hear some of those lessons in Podcasting Life and Business After Four Years-Podcast 622.

Soul killing corporate jobs aren’t for everyone

Some business owners wish for the peace of collecting a paycheck and doing what the boss wants. Not me. Going into business for myself has been a path of self discovery and self realization. You say goodbye to eight hour days and regimented work schedules. No more guaranteed paychecks. Some months are great. Some aren’t so great. You’re ‘On It’ pretty much 24 hours a day. Freedom is one of the rewards. Wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Self Realization

Surprisingly, how I spend my time has become one of the top priorities. I can do anything I want. Is what I am doing with my time going to benefit the business? How does the business grow? What is the core business? How is that going to change? Self Realization is one of the big benefits of being in business alone. No one around to give orders. Good decisions accrue to the business owner. So do the bad decisions. Thus, you spend a lot of time thinking things through.

Content Creators

Centuries of business have been about consolidating physical space. Farmers need more land. Ranchers need more space for more cattle. Retailers always want to open new locations. Content creators have real estate in cyber space. With the right tools we can make that space as big as it needs to be. A new world requires a complete change in thinking. Content creators don’t just have to change the ‘working for the man’ mindset, but how we think about what we do as well.

Podcasting As A Business

Podcasting is still a fledgling ‘industry’. We podcasters are cutting a new trail. As an advertising medium Podcasting works. Smaller podcasts can yield very good results too. Podcasts big and small tell stories and provide basic information on highly specific topics unavailable anywhere else. Podcasters make an authentic human connection with the listener not found in broadcast media.

Walk and Talk

The rules of the Walk and Talk Podcast are no prep, no plan. Just talk. Join me. What came up in this podcast are the life and business lessons I’ve learned since I started podcasting. If you’re considering going into business for yourself, especially as a content creator, do what you love. Passion for the work will get you through a lot of rainy days.

Midnight Walk and Talk-Ambition Business Materialism-Podcast 615

Coffee in the morning? Yoga? Check and check. Doesn’t take much to make me happy these days. Have my wants become less than my needs? Motivation is essential to build a business. More clients. More revenue. Where does your motivation come from? In Midnight Walk and Talk-Ambition Business Materialism-Podcast 615.

Think Different

What’s your motivation? Material wants can fuel ambition. Good right? Thing is, creative people think a little differently. Motivated by the work. Add coffee, yoga and a roof and you probably have one happy creative. Thing is maybe that creative needs a little more, but doesn’t ‘know’ it. We’re going to walk and talk about it in Midnight Walk and Talk-Ambition Business Materialism-Podcast 615.

Unconscious Needs Surprise

Rules of the walk and talk podcast. No preparation. No plan. See what comes up. I was surprised in this podcast! Thoughts about what we need versus was we want in a material culture surfaced. Do we know what we need? Do we need a brand new car? Nice to have. No judgement on that new Bentley! But, do I need a new Bentley. Nah.

Simple Life

Got four pairs of old jeans. Two pairs of boots. Some flannel shirts. An all protein diet. Casino buffet night once a week. Water and coffee only. Yoga Mat. Two CarHart jackets. A hat and some broken glasses. A 2000 Ford Diesel Ambulance. An old Crown Vic. Travel and Adventure. Lots of audio equipment. Three old computers. Smart Phone. Stay up all night. Do a podcast. Feeling great. In Midnight Walk and Talk-Ambition Business Materialism-Podcast 615.

Meeting Needs

Sometimes we need more than we want. We just don’t know it. Maybe the ambition to serve more clients and a bigger audience would be served by making sure some needs, spoken or unspoken, get met. Now, about that Bentley.

Podcast 606-“My Personal State Of The Union Message”

Media Event

US Presidents must report to Congress “from time to time” as required by the US Constitution. President Washington delivered the first state of the union message in person. Most presidents literally mailed it in after Washington. In Podcast 606-“My Personal State Of The Union Message”.

Shifting Focus Podcast 606-“My Personal State Of The Union Message”

Think Oscars. White House Correspondents dinner. Events made for the media. Perfect time for me to share in Podcast 606-My State Of The Union Message. A year of travel resulted in an increasing interest in the business of my business. In Podcast 606-“My Personal State Of The Union Message” I talk about how my focus has shifted.

Purpose

Experts tell entrepreneurs to focus. Have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish. They don’t say how much you’ll learn about yourself. How much you’ll change along the way. Starting a business is a process of self discovery. Working for ‘the man’ can cause needless worry about what happens if you make a mistake.

Good News

Every day is a new challenge. When you’re the boss all the good and bad things accrue directly to you. I am much more interested now in building a dynamic and creative business to provide resources for me to do the things I am passionate about doing. A business that serves clients and the audience. My business allows me to change and be more creative.

Breaking Free

Untethering has become my new passion. Selling everything. Getting rid of the house and car. Hitting the road. Staying on the road. Business consultants who travel all the time are doing it. Vagabonds have been doing it for years. The objective is to cover news stories as they happen and find interesting people and places to visit and talk about.

Live Your Passion

The State of The Union Message is an opportunity to talk politics. It’s also an opportunity to examine our own lives over the past year or so. Are we living our passion? Doing what we love? Sharing the passion with business associates, family and friends?

Podcast 599-Advertising Your Business On Podcasts

Big Shift

Time to talk about advertising on podcasts. We’re in the middle of a big shift. People are changing how they use media. What about using podcasting to Advertise Your Business? Podcasting is a rapidly growing space. Businesses can use podcasts to connect with their customers. Podcast 599-Advertising Your Business On Podcasts tells you how.

Retooling Your Mind

Entrepreneurial efforts require retooling how we think. Why do small businesses fail? Your business may have developed a great product. You and your team may have discovered a large untapped market. Getting the word out about a product or service is increasingly complex. Not advertising or advertising ineffectively is one of the chief reasons small businesses fail.

Old Ways Don’t Work

Studies say about 30 percent of the public listen to podcasts. I think podcasting is growing at a much quicker pace than the research is picking up. In this environment, it’s easy to see why small businesses might assume the old ‘tried and true’ methods of advertising are best. Print or Direct Mail. Buying ads on radio and television. Hiring an ad agency. Flyers. These are ancient and expensive and increasingly ineffective methods.

New Ad Space

Digital Marketing and Search Engine Optimization are big topics these days at business conferences. Digital Marketing and SEO are necessary for generating awareness for your company’s website and social media platforms. These tools alone don’t help you form a bond with potential customers. Advertising your product or service on a podcast provides a personal connection with an audience you cannot get in traditional broadcast, print or direct mail, or even social media. Ads placed on podcasts live forever on the Internet. Podcasts can deliver a local, national or world-wide audience. Podcast 599-Advertising Your Business On Podcasts tells you how and why.

Pure Play Podcasting

Small businesses persist in spending thousands of dollars in old media. Pure Play Podcasters like The Bob Davis Podcasts weave the advertiser’s message into the content of our podcast. We talk about a product or service because we believe in it. The Bob Davis Podcasts and other Pure play podcasters are able to combine the best attributes of personal endorsements with digital marketing and SEO to help your business.

Are You Ready For Big Changes?

There is a big change going on. The new smart phone and pad devices are more powerful and run easier and faster applications for media. Podcasters are noticing increases in feeds and hits on our websites as more people come to digital media every day. From an advertising perspective managing your FaceBook or Twitter feed to bond with your customers isn’t enough. Businesses need a closer bond. Podcasting helps you bond with your potential customers.

Clarifying Moment

Big shifts in media usage begin long before the research companies driven by the big advertising agencies and media companies pick them up. AM Radio was overtaken by FM Radio slowly, then all at once. 24 Hour Cable News overwhelmed broadcast TV news in an avalanche. Remember when you listened to the radio to find your favorite music? Spotify, Pandora and podcasts took over that space. We used to watch our favorite TV shows once a week as part of a network schedule. Now we binge watch them on Netflix or HBO Now or other cable ‘Netflix Like’ services. When did that happen?

Tipping Point For Podcasts

Podcasts are replacing broadcast radio, especially talk radio, at a rapid pace. It isn’t being picked up by the research and ratings companies. We have not had what I call a ‘clarifying moment’ yet. A clarifying moment is that moment when it becomes obvious to everyone that things have changed permanently.

There are lots of different podcasts and all of us have different advertising styles and packages. This is an informative pitch for advertising from businesses that want to work with The Bob Davis Podcasts or are interested getting some help with their advertising strategy with podcasts in general. It’s time for small and large businesses to get into the podcast space in a big way. We’re ready for you. Listen to Podcast 599-Advertising Your Business On Podcasts and find out how to get started.

Podcast 530

Freedom to Fly. Or is that fly to be free? Live at the EAA Airventure air show at Osh Kosh, for 2016. This is my second year at this show. Last year I would have been happy to just record some sounds, and take you on a simple walk through of the show. In my second year, I have peeled off a layer by getting around to talk to some people here at the show. First, a fly-in camper and second Sam Bousfield, CEO and designer of the Samson Switchblade. Almost everyone you meet here has some kind of interesting story, with all kinds of twists and turns. Freedom to Fly. Flying means Freedom. Whether it is the chiropractor who flies in to spend a week talking aviation with friends he only sees here, who also fly in, or vendors and manufacturers of aircraft, and anything related to aircraft. One of the things we keep hearing about is the flying car. The switchblade has some interesting characteristics which allows it to escape some of the heavier regulation associated with vertical take off and landing ‘flying cars’, which actually haven’t flown, despite years and years of development. The switchblade should be flying by 2017 though you’ll have to have a private pilot’s license and take off and land on a runway. It’s been a great challenge to design, get funding and get through development and testing of something almost everyone imagines will be the future. Finally, the message of the EAA Airventure air show? In my opinion it has a lot to do with freedom. This is a huge gathering of very positive people, a place where entrepreneurial energy, technical knowledge, design, the sheer passion for flying and a can do attitude comes together and makes beautiful music. When you see what has been going on these last two weeks on TV, with two national political conventions, it’s just nice to hang with people who would rather talk about the hairy approach to the busiest airport in the world for this week, or about their airplane, than presidential candidates. Can’t say as I blame them. For me, the passion and fun I see displayed here is what the whole country needs right now. Sponsored by Karow Contracting and X Government Cars.

Podcast 514-Bob Davis Podcasts Radio Show-31

Podcast 514-Bob Davis Podcasts Radio Show-31. This week’s edition of the radio show, now heard Sunday’s at 4PM on AM1280 The Patriot in Minneapolis and Saint Paul with new affiliates as we get them through the syndicator, GCNLIVE.com. This is a great review of the week, with some new content for the radio show that hasn’t been in the podcasts. The mission of this show is to bring content from the podcasts back to the radio. This week – in podcast time – has been a difficult week, in the wake of the Orlando Terror Attack. The social and political debate has followed the path I predicted last Sunday night. Gun Control advocates on one side, people who think the failure is the President’s and it is because he refuses to use the term Radical Islam to describe the enemies of the United States. Again predictably, the same lines of argument played out in Congress, and across the board in the media. Most of what happened this week has been useless in protecting Americans from potential ‘lone wolf’ terrorists, and the fact is, little will be done as we have a presidential election, and then the inauguration of a new president and congress in January of next year. It will take time for the new president and congress to grapple with these issues, and form new policy ideas and formulate plans to ‘deal’ with whatever the problem is. The fact that the argument follows predictable pathways is as depressing as the event itself. We’ll change the energy a little bit in Podcast 514-Bob Davis Podcasts Radio Show-31, to talk about creativity, business and being an entrepreneur. If you listened to Podcast 513 it will be amusing to listen to the edited version of that podcast for the final segment of Podcast 514-Bob Davis Podcasts Radio Show-31, because it is edited for radio station programmers and owners, slightly softening some of the harshest criticism of the radio business heard in Podcast 513. Still, some of the points are applicable to any American business institution these days, whether it is corporate America, or even some elements of politics. Given the technology we have to amplify the individual, there’s still a lot of old thinking in business and politics these days. Sponsored by Karow Contracting and Hydrus Performance.

Podcast 506

Future Shock. As the 24 hour news media and talk radio fixate on gorillas and high school election antics, its hard to get a conversation going about the future. Is the future potential leaders want the future we should have? Is it the future we want? There are developments almost everyday now with autonomous cars, robotics, materials, aviation, and communications; the building blocks of a future wave that will leave nothing untouched and unchanged. A series of stories from today’s headlines shedding a light on one potential future and a question; Planners and government officials are  diverting resources to bring about a vision of the city of tomorrow, which is really the city of the early 1900’s. Is this what you want? Will the driverless car, autonomous software and machines, robotics, and other developments make trains, buses and the standard bureaucracy heavy city, state and federal government ‘obsolete’? If so, why is so much time, effort and authority expended to see that we plan for and create a urban spaces, and that suburban villages and towns conform to a vision of a city that probably never existed and never will. Driverless cars will render the amount of space needed for freeways and parking ramps obsolete. Remote technology, robotics and other technologies may mean that people will not have to travel to large office complexes for their work, with increasing freelance employment. What are our so called leaders talking about? Minimum wages, government controlled health insurance and trains. Trains. Why are we planning for 1940’s Chicago when reality could be closer to Jefferson’s vision than Robert Moses? The old world is being torn down and a new one is being built that will be very different from what we know. Do our leaders understand this? Future Shock. Sunny Lohmann – Podcast 454

Sunny Lohmann. Political Humorist Sunny joins the Bob Davis Podcasts with an announcement about a new You Tube effort, plus  the top stories catching her attention. Sunny announces a new You Tube channel, details at House of Sunny TV. From the mass attack on women in Germany, by ‘Middle Eastern’ and ‘East African’ men which appears to have been coordinated, to the rancher dispute in Oregon and the occupation of a federal government wildlife facility in the middle of nowhere, Sunny’s got game. From there it’s onto Guns! Guns! Guns! The President’s executive orders on gun control and what they mean, and discussion of crime and firearm statistics. Almost all of these numbers are fertile ground for political activists and point of view journalists, as well as presidents, as witnessed by President Obama’s recent CNN ‘Town Hall’ meeting on gun control. According to Sunny, one of the things point of view researchers do is lump firearm suicides and incidents where law abiding citizens have defended themselves and property with firearms, with mass shootings. Moreover, the question of whether to include a terror incident which includes a mass shooting such as San Bernardino, with other types of mass shooting events is usually never addressed by commentators … but it is here. Do ‘conservatives’ in the United States need another enemy? Sunny and Bob react to a nationally syndicated columnist and talk show hosts call for ‘statism’ to become the ‘new philosophical enemy’ of ‘conservatives’. Sounds like another opportunity for a talk show host to sell books and to gin up more outrage. Bob and Sunny also talk about life, raising children and visits to the Golden State; California, where Sunny lives. Surprisingly enough both agree, “It’s beautiful there.” Sponsored by Pride of Homes and Luke Team Real Estate and Hydrus Performance.

Podcast 451

New Years Podcast 2015 and Heartfelt Thanks. Big thank you’s to listeners, clients and people who have helped me develop the Bob Davis Podcasts along the way. As I review all the podcasts for 2015 I am a little surprised at the breadth and depth of podcasting content. It’s also interesting to note the metamorphosis I’ve gone through, starting with the News Cleanse in the summer of 2014, through to content that reflects more of what is going on in my mind just beneath the surface. The need to go deeper, both personally and on the issues, rather than to chronicle the daily outrage machine has become a hallmark of these podcasts. Add to that the new mobility enabled with Mobile Podcast Command and you have the wrinkles added to these podcasts in 2015. Its hard to believe we started 2015 back in January with Podcast 284 talking about the ‘Polar Vortex’ and end 2015 with podcast 451, which focuses on the lessons of small business, content creation and entrepreneurship. First to thank the clients of The Bob Davis Podcasts, who have become more than clients, but advisors and mentors. Then to family and friends who have provided support in so many ways including my son – who recently appeared on the podcasts with his own content creation effort – and the General Manager of the Podcasts; My Mom. Finally to the subscribers, listeners and contributors to the Bob Davis Podcasts. As I review the podcasts I hope my goal of going deeper on issues with interviews, ‘study pieces’, coverage of the 2016 election cycle that takes you inside events, New Thinking, Walk and Talk Podcasts and talk about the issues that matter to you, the audio book and new radio show, pays off on the promise of what podcasting can be. Thanks each and every one of you for supporting this effort in 2015. Here’s to us doing great things in 2016. Sponsored by X Government Trucks and Ryan Plumbing and Heating of Saint Paul.

Podcast 440

New Radio Show. In a freewheeling discussion on Saturday night about talk radio, media and creativity, the new Bob Davis Podcasts Radio Show on the Genesis Communications Network is announced. The Bob Davis Podcasts are content rich, so taking some of that content and reproducing it into a one hour weekly show available on the Westwood Satellite for radio stations, is a new idea. From here we talk about the current state of talk radio and media, as well as what’s planned for next year at The Bob Davis Podcasts. Some of the people who listen to these podcasts are interested in ‘behind the scenes’ stuff in radio. While there isn’t going to be any dirt thrown in this podcast, there is discussion about the fact that broadcast media, as well as some of the older style cable news channels really aren’t serving viewers and listeners anymore. It seems more and more as though the job of talkers is to get people angry and upset, or to gin up longer listening spans by talking about nothing, using emotional content in the worst sort of way. One of the things podcasters learn right away is, there is a lot more content in a half-hour podcast than you’ll ever hear in an hour on the radio or on cable TV News, and certainly in an hour of television news. What’s also surprising is the realization that being in business for yourself, and building the business, is sometimes more fun and engaging that actually doing the podcasts. Podcasting itself – while not brand new – is brand new to most people, especially for those long time talk radio listeners who find themselves with nothing to listen to. A new medium means new opportunities for business, which can be very exciting. The New Bob Davis Podcast Radio Show will feature content from the podcasts, which should become very dense after February 1st, as we begin official coverage of election 2016, by covering the Iowa Caucuses and then a grand trip through Mid South Super Tuesday States, to South Carolina (third in the nation primary state), Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Texas and north back to the Twin Cities. Of course, the podcasts will continue right here at thebobdavispodcasts.com. Watch this space for links and specifics regarding the new Bob Davis Podcasts Radio Show.
