Taking Travel To A New Level

I love to travel. Even more I think there’s nothing better than going to the story. Learn more in Election2020-Barnstorming-Iowa-Challenges-Bob Davis-Podcast 895.

Back Roads In The Dead Of A Midwest Winter

First of all when I go, I go back roads only. Second, I take the podcast studio on the road with me.

Iowa Caucus Coverage

I’m covering the democrat campaigns to win the Iowa Caucuses in less than a week.

Up Close and Personal

Especially relevant is the why in this equation. I do this because there’s no equal to seeing these candidates up close and personal. In addition going to the story is better than hearing pundits tell us what to think about what’s literally happening.

No Judgements

These days a podcast that takes you inside campaign events, without judgement, is quite unique.

Personal Challenges Barnstorming In Winter

Saying this is difficult is certainly true. Doing it in the dead of winter is challenging to say the least. I talk about the personal challenges doing this, in Election2020-Barnstorming-Iowa-Challenges-Bob Davis-Podcast 895.

Going To The Story

If you want to hear some of the podcasts I’ve done about the pipeline protest, air shows, and Sturgis click here.

Cold Feet and Generators, Walmart Parking Lots and Truck Stops

Long time listeners know I do all this from a twenty year old ambulance which has not been converted into an RV. Camp stoves, coolers, generators, propane and electric heaters. More importantly cold feet are the order of the day.

No Van Life Picture But Having A Blast

Due to these kinds of challenges you’d think I would be miserable. On the contrary I am having a blast. It’s no ‘van life‘ picture in the mountains, but it’s tons of fun.

Nothing Sweeter Than The 1930’s

If you study history you know we all have our favorite periods. These days I turn more and more to 1930’s America. Specifically the story of Bonnie and Clyde. Learn more in Bonnie-Clyde-1930s-America-Bob Davis Podcast 830.

Highwaymen

There’s a new movie on Netflix called ‘Highwaymen‘. The movie details the search for Bonnie and Clyde and their inevitable end and stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson. I like this movie because it does a better job telling more of the real story, than other efforts.

The Ford V8

Especially relevant to the story is the automobile and the then new national highway system. For Clyde Barrow there was no equal to the then brand new Ford V-8. This was Barrow’s number one choice to steal. Bonnie Parker died with a map of the old national highway system on her lap.

National Highway System

Most noteworthy Barrow was famous for covering as much as a thousand miles in one day in one of his stolen Ford V-8’s. The duo sped across New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota and Kansas on those brand new blacktopped two lane interstate highways, and many a dirt road or field during their crime sprees.

Depression and Crime

The height of the depression in the early 1930’s comes down to us in faded black and white photos, and speed graphic newspaper photos taken in tourist camps, abandoned farms and failed banks. Yet the people then, experienced it in color. Find out why this era fascinates me in Bonnie-Clyde-1930s-America-Bob Davis Podcast 830.

Criminal Minds

Finally there is this question of criminal behavior. Bonnie and Clyde have a special place in 1930’s history. To a certain degree their story line is a lie. Foolish young people pushed into a life of crime by life circumstances? Or criminals that terrorized local communities across the rural Midwest?

Mystery and Legend

In conclusion Highwaymen, three books I read before for a podcast I did about the mystery and legend of Texas Ranger Frank Hamer. Those links are here. I did these podcasts because so many inaccuracies and lies have become part of Bonnie and Clyde lore.

Texas. That’s all you need to say. Texas. We start on the Texas Gulf Coast at Galveston and work our way up to Beaumont, Houston, on through central Texas with an eye toward La Grange, Austin, Waco and finally to Dallas. If you woke up in one of these places, even any of the smaller towns along the way, you would know, you could only be in Texas. Along the way, lots of stories from this Road Trip so far, including the drive up the Gulf Coast through Mississippi and Alabama, and Louisiana, ending in New Orleans on Saturday night, where Mobile Podcast Command was forced to break the law, in service of a cup of chicory coffee and a pastry from Cafe Dumonde. Sadly, New Orleans seems like it is still struggling to overcome the effects of Katrina, which is probably why there are suddenly so many parking restrictions, and the parking authorities so vigilant. So out of character for this ‘anything goes’ town. In Mississippi, you pass the beautiful home of the president of the confederacy Jefferson Davis, and one can only wonder what it must have been like to leave this gorgeous home on the beach, move to a place like Richmond, to ‘run the confederacy’; a really bad decision in the long run. Did he ever make it back? Then the gulf coast, with its brand new ‘towns on stilts’…literally the houses, the stores, the cafes are all built on pylons, to withstand floods and perhaps the intense winds of hurricanes, which come every year. The Bolivar Peninsula, and Galveston where I finally found the deserted coast line I have been looking for. Finally central Texas including Houston and finally Dallas. Both of these cities are juggernauts on their own. When you combine Houston and Dallas with San Antonio, Austin and the western Texas cities, you begin to understand why this state is so important, and why it is unlike any other.
