Certainly this has been a year.

That is to say it was difficult.

Above all while I think we’re going through a major transition on many levels New Year’s Eve isn’t the best time to chronicle all that.

And a look ahead for 2023 travel and challenges.

Tough Times

To clarify the elephant in the room has been inflation.

For Nomads Too

Furthermore I’ve done more than a few podcasts about inflation and what it means for the nomad.

Economic Issues

Most importantly economic issues have made 2022 difficult.

Optimistic For 2023

I prefer to remain optimistic for 2023.

Challenges

In the same vein though I think there are economic challenges ahead that can be good and bad for different people around the world and the country

On the other hand this podcast will not be going into economic stuff too deeply.

Because we have parties to get ready for!

Artistic Business Challenges

In short there are people to thank.

As well as some talk about running an artistic business.

Change Is An Ongoing Theme

To sum up 2022 has been tough. I’ve had to change how I travel.

Barnstorming

Certainly that means less barnstorming around the country.

Enriched

However my life has been enriched by relationships with other nomads formed because I was forced to stay in one place more than I would have liked.

Grateful

Finally there are things to be grateful for.

Maybe more so because of the kind of year we all had.

In conclusion change seems to have been a theme this year and is certainly on the horizon next year.

An old picture and a lunch sparked my thoughts for Artistic Authenticity-Radio Stories-Bob Davis Podcast 787. These days the word ‘authentic‘ is often used to describe people who seem real. How does ‘authenticity’ translate to creative work?

Do You Believe What You Say?

Especially relevant, my friend wondered if I “believed the things” I say “on the radio and in podcasts?“.

It’s Complicated

What’s ‘Being Authentic’?

What does ‘being authentic’ mean? Do a little research and you’ll find plenty of articles about ‘being authentic’. Most noteworthy is this list of attributes for authentic and inauthentic people.

Starts With Radio

As a result of all these lists of attributes for actually being authentic I realized my focus is about being authentic or real in my creative efforts.

Above all I am a radio guy. When I started in radio I couldn’t get enough of the ways and means and the lore of the business. 

Creative Freedom

Moroever in those days we were working in the ruins of faded AM stations. Therefore unlike radio today we had a lot of creative freedom.  Find out more in Artistic Authenticity-Radio Stories-Bob Davis Podcast 787.

Consequently we learned our business by doing. Especially relevant we also learned by imitating. Above all I’d always tried to be real when I was on the radio. When I got better at radio as a craft I returned to the idea of actually being real and natural.

Being Real

Podcasting Formats and the Cutting Room Floor

Therefore, as a result of experience and commitment, authenticity seems like it is easier. However there is always something left on the cutting room floor. Certainly even in podcasting.

Authentic Isn’t As Easy As It Looks

Consequently when we see a performance by a master we should remember it probably took years to create that authenticity within the medium.

Fast Change

It’s hard to believe how much the world has changed in just ten years. Five years ago social media was in its infancy. Twitter is just 11 years old this year. The iPhone is only ten years old. Smart devices are getting smarter. Especially relevant is the truth that change is going to go faster. Drones. Cyber Terror. Driverless Cars. Autonomous Machines. Some of the effects will be good. Some will not be good.

Fear Anxiety Dread Anguish

Seems like we used to talk about robots disrupting traditional businesses. Now it’s happening. So, when Amazon buys Whole Foods, there is a reaction. Does this mean people will lose their jobs? Does cheaper food mean deflation? When there is a new development we’re immediately told what the effects will be before anyone has had a chance to soak it in. Gonna Take More Than Just Love

What is the antidote to fear and loathing? Truth is, it would be easy to say love is the answer. What is love without knowledge? Remember how we learned to swim or ride a bike? There was fear at first, until we figured out step by step what we had to do to float, or balance. From knowledge and experience comes judgement.

Building A New World

New technology forms the cornerstones of the world we’re building, whether we want to build or not. Social media, constant coverage, blathering back and forth, isn’t going to stop. We need to learn more and fear less in order to make the right choices. Perspective comes from the combination of knowledge and life experience. The more we know about things we don’t understand the less we fear them. We’ll talk about it in In Fear Anxiety Hope In A Time Of Fast Change-Podcast 643.

Taking Charge

Human connections and real experiences are also important. Turning off the shouting back and forth. Taking a break from politics. Giving to and accepting help from those that come from different perspectives helps build a base of experience and knowledge. Reading a book about something not relevant to the day to day. Travel.

Try a Head Stand!

Finally, it helps to have some kind of physical practice. Whatever it is we like to do. Hiking, hunting, yoga, martial arts, camping, running. It all helps to get away from the natural inclination to check your twitter feed or post another selfie on Instagram.
