Media Is The Big Trigger Word

These days the word media triggers all kinds of responses. We think we’re living in a new age. IIn fact the medium may have changed but the message is the same. Learn more in New-Media-Same-Message-Bob Davis Podcast 929.

TV Shows and You Tube

First of all I’ve been watching a lot of clips from old TV shows on You Tube.

Miss The Old Days?

Second, saw a meme on social media the other day. Seems like we miss the old days, when there were only a few trusted sources when it came to news.

Have Things Really Changed That Much?

Certainly there is a nostalgia for the old ways and the old days for older Americans. However it begs the question, have things really changed?

New Media Same Message

In New-Media-Same-Message-Bob Davis Podcast 929, some easy talk about those old days plus some observations about the current time frame.

Media Outlets and Choices

For example back in the day most people might have been able to get two local newspapers, three or four local TV stations and a few local radio stations. Commentary was available on the editorial pages and a few news magazines.

Big Audiences Back In The Day

Even more audiences were larger for those few sources. There were no smart phones, computers or Internet.

Digital Age Changed Everything Right?

Due to the advent of cable, internet, computers and smart phones we now live in what we call the ‘digital age’.

The Message Was Always To Conform

During the so called old days media served an important purpose. Among other things, it was a tool to encourage people to conform.

New Platforms Different Mission

Finally the truth is we have the same number of major platforms we had back in the day. The difference is these platforms provide an opportunity for millions to be heard and seen.

We’re Still Pushed To Conform

However today’s supposedly complex media in the same vein as the old, pushes people to conform.

Tribes, Villages, Birds of A Feather

We speak to our tribe and not everyone. Our instinct to conform is reinforced by social media and other platforms.

The Message Is Manipulation and Control And We’re Still Buying It

In short no matter how sophisticated apparently we’re still ripe for manipulation and control.

On Media. It started out as an idea for a podcast on Friday. A departure from the increasingly tedious, even terrifying and depressing world of politics. As the weekend progressed and opportunities for socializing were offered, ‘On Media’ moldered, then morphed into something more complex. After several attempts to assess what the podcast would be about, one attempt to write it and three attempts to record it, I finally just said the hell with it and decided to talk it out. Thus ‘On Media’. Some of it is a repackaging of ideas behind the podcasts I’ve done about the fact that the mass marketing most of us have gown up in is gone, replaced with a new world of mass specialization. People ask me all the time what is going on in the world. What’s wrong with the media. Or, they tell me the media is at fault. The media is bad. What is the definition of media? What is it’s role in society? What’s really going on? These days we have millions of sources of information available at any time. Any one of those sources can be the most viewed in any single day. It is not unusual for You Tube channels to have more views in a few hours than the cable news channels have all week. In the middle of this is politics. All news coverage is emotional and symbolic. There used to be a tactic called political theater. Now it’s all theater. Politics is media. We are submerged in images of persuasion everywhere we go. From the logos on the clothing we wear, to the TV’s in bars pouring their images into our minds while we eat our burgers. All these images are emotional, and emotional because emotion persuades. You think people seem angry, frustrated, confused? Wonder why? We can’t seem to get a handle on what’s wrong. Our government is the product of something called The Enlightenment. Are we enlightened? Or enslaved? Sponsored by Brush Studio in the West End, Saint Louis Park, and by Hydrus Performance.

How Media Has Changed. I’m about to go to my high school reunion, but for me, it’s a different kind of high school reunion. At over a thousand in my graduating class, it was way to big and impersonal for a full reunion. So, we’re having a reunion of graduates of the school’s ‘radio lab’ program, which included the high school radio station, where the ‘radio bug’ first bit. In a mid fall relaxed conversation on the deck with a fire, on a warm midnight, it’s time to talk about how television and radio have changed over the years giving way to social media, time shifting, video games, You Tube, cable only series and now serial dramas, really produced exclusively for viewing on line, or on specific sites. We used to have a collective experience — watching the same shows when they came on or watching events as they unfolded in real time. Those shared societal experiences don’t happen very often these days, aside from sporting events or monolithic breaking news stories. We do have collective experiences, but they happen at different times. What are you watching these days? Dramas? News? Comedy? Documentaries? Most people aren’t watching commercials anymore, taking the feed direct from the line, but they’re time shifting, watching more TV, consuming more information, but in a different way. How have opportunities to message the public changes. Besides, its fun sometimes to talk about what we’re watching. What is media?
