Civil War Echoes In North Carolina

First of all we don’t notice the echoes of the US Civil War most of the time. But they’re there. Especially in the American South. Hear those echoes in Civil-War-Echoes-Bob Davis Podcast 968.

Civil War

Secondly I’ve studied the Civil War and lived in the South.

Life Long Learner

Of course that doesn’t make me an authority on so called Southern Culture.

Many Reminders Of The War In The South

But if you are a thinking person and you travel through the south, you can’t help but notice many reminders of that war.

Mute Reminders of Struggle

Even more plaques by the side of the road serve as mute reminders of desperate struggle, death and loss.

Monuments To The Confederacy

Above all my own thoughts about why there are any monuments to the Confederacy manifested in real time.

Black Lives Matter Protest

I drove right into a Black Lives Matter protest in the nice little town of Graham, North Carolina.

Time To Stop!

Consequently I had to stop and record.

160 Years Later It Is Still Real

Civil-War-Echoes-Bob Davis Podcast 968 is a slice of the emotions that still smoulder in this country and especially in the South, one hundred sixty years later.

Peaceful Protest

Most importantly this was a peaceful protest on both sides. BLM, and the locals.

Monument To Common Confederate Soldier In Graham North Carolina

At issue is one of many monuments to the common confederate soldiers who perished in the war.

Glorifying Slavery or Celebrating Culture and Heritage

In short protesters say these kinds of monuments glorify a system based on slavery. Locals say it is their heritage and culture.

Thoughts Manifest In Real Time

Most importantly I did this podcast because I was struck at the resonance of a sudden real event and my thoughts.

Southern Culture Isn’t Just Pecan Pie and Cotton

In addition it is also a good time to say some things about what Southern Culture might actually be about.

The Civil War Still Hurts Us All

In short to wonder why a war that hurts us still, had to ever happen to begin with.

Unity Confidence Game-American Tribes-Bob Davis Podcast 772

Tensions are high these days. People fear violence. The media sells a coming Civil War. Now we’re hearing calls for ‘Unity’. Is it a con? Learn more in Unity Confidence Game-American Tribes-Bob Davis Podcast 772.

Now We’re Tribes

A popular word these days is ‘tribal‘. People who think a certain way are a ‘tribe’. I thought we were all Americans. One tribe. Apparently not.

We’re Supposed To Disagree

Aren’t we supposed to disagree? Moreover we have a system designed to use disagreement to find the best path forward.

Is Unity Tyranny?

In this freewheeling talker, I suggest unity implies we all have to agree. Especially relevant is the problem pushing for ‘unity’ creates. You have to agree with me. I have to agree with you. Those who disagree or say things ‘we’ don’t agree with should be ‘sent away’. Listen to Unity Confidence Game-American Tribes-Bob Davis Podcast 772.

Emotionally Charged Environment

In addition media goes for the emotional hook. Because we’re in an emotionally charged environment, there’s no context. Even more, trends of thought or story lines pass for ‘news’. Large swaths of the population get their information without history or context from social media.

False Choice

Most noteworthy in a world fueled by feelings, talking heads tell us we have to choose “between war and peace”. Civil war or Civil peace. Certainly this is a false choice and a very dangerous suggestion. More in Unity Confidence Game-American Tribes-Bob Davis Podcast 772.

Celebrate Factionalism

Finally factionalism is a natural human tendency. That’s ok. Social systems designed to weed out factions are tyrannies. If we both agree, one of us is unnecessary.

Read History Gain Perspective

In conclusion beware of all this unity talk. If we can’t disagree and talk about problems, we can’t solve them. Celebrate differences. Read history. Consequently gain perspective.

Podcast 218

It’s complicated. Why are ‘simple’ solutions advocated for complicated problems, and what happens when those ‘simple’ solutions don’t work? With airstrikes beginning against ISIS, apparently many in the US expect ISIS to be ‘destroyed’. Really? Fact is, things are hardly as simple as the commentariat would have us believe. Every crisis contains layers of political, diplomatic, military, corporate, social and other special interests that have to be considered. Then there is the corporate and independent media, and social media. ‘On The Ground’, inside any breaking story, are other, similar layers to be considered by policy makers. Demanding the simple solution plays well on the shout-fests that pass for ‘news’ these days, but seldom play in the real world; One of the reasons we are underwhelmed when things go wrong. People seem to think there was a time when things were easily resolved. Was there? The American Civil War? Prohibition? World War II? The Cold War? When was it ever easy or simple? We’re still getting used to the new complexities of a multi polar – chaotic – world, made more confusing by many new technical innovations with increasingly positive and negative effects. While there are simple solutions to problems every now and then, one has to understand the details to sell those ‘simple’ solutions and selling it can be complicated. History always seems easier when it is written than when it actually plays out. Today, people demand solutions, but they don’t want to know the details. Is this a willful ignorance? A willful refusal to participate or learn? Is it ‘the media’s fault’? Or, is it our fault? Either we pitch in and become informed, or we accept what our elected leaders do. We expect flawless performance from our technology and our leaders and are shocked when it fails. We might be living through a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change our government to be more responsive to individuals, but we’re not going to do it through ignorance and apathy.
