Moreover if we’re navigating in a world without truth then we’re living in a form of delirium.

Fact Checker

Firstly I often find myself in the role of ‘fact checker’ around the nomad campfire.

Nobody Likes A Fact Checker

And every now and then I declare a moratorium on fact checking.

Because when it comes to the social aspects of nomad life no one wants find themselves constantly corrected.

No One Wants To Be Made Wrong

In addition none of us wants to be wrong.

Determining Facts

However over the winter months one of the skills I developed was the ability to determine facts and therefore truth.

Certainly there are methods of logic.

As well as legal standards such as the basic rules of evidence.

Finally the need for context on any particular controversial subject.

Not Political

Most importantly while I started these podcasts with political content over time I have developed a policy against such content.

Therefore the tools I offer can be useful when determining facts in any subject of conversation, without getting political.

In fact I don’t really care what the reader’s political leanings might be.

We All Need A Dose Of The Truth

That is to say we all need a dose of fact checking every now and then.

Fact Checking Is Not Listening To The Guy You Agree With

To sum up all media has devolved into creating a sense of urgency around it’s content while at the same time developing a penchant for predicting the future.

Sometimes We Don’t Know

More importantly no matter what we’re talking about sometimes the best thing we can do is admit we just don’t know.

My Own Search For Truth

In conclusion it’s important to point out I discovered these tools in my own search for truth regarding the recent run up in the price of fuel and the ensuing inflation.

It has been difficult and time consuming but rewarding.

Context

To be sure the hardest part of all of this is developing a sense of historical context and an instinct for what is relevant in any consideration of a problem.

No One Else Is Going To Do It

Secondly and sadly these days no one is going to do this work for us.

This isn’t about free speech. The seed of thought here is about image. I think artists are bigger than the slimy and messy world of politics. Finally, even political commentators ruin themselves when they feel the need to rush out and endorse a political ‘hero’ of the moment. The goal is usually relevance. Or, is it ego?

When Idealists and Artists Fall Into The Oily Political Pit

In the end, it’s my experience politicians never do what they promise. Finally the seedy world of politics especially in Washington DC is no place for idealists. Truth is, the best artists can channel their frustration or anger into…art! Real art.

Unfortunately it seems like local artists and commentators as well as a few national artists who should know better, feel compelled to fill their social media feeds with memes, videos and rants. I am sure most of them would hope those will someday be forgotten. As a result I tentatively suggest artists and commentators use our talent and our tools rather than overt rants and social media.

To remain relevant, especially with younger viewers, broadcast TV shows are posting You Tube clips. Moreover huge percentages of people now say they get their news from social media.

Political Correctness Has Ruined Comedy?

In her view, comedians cease being funny when they start worrying about whether what they say will be permissible. Artists lose their way trying to be relevant to an audience. Artists have to take risks, especially in comedy.

The Content Minefield

So many scolds are so quick to attack these days on both sides of the political spectrum. The result is a minefield any content creator will eventually wander into. We wonder whether the best thing is to go direct to the audience and consumer with your own channels and podcasts. How does a YouTuber or podcaster navigate around content control algorithms?

Relevance

Finally we talk about how the former mainstream political content giants have ceased to be relevant, chiefly among them AM Talk Radio, which we both agree is unlistenable these days. A good lesson for the tech giants, which are more vulnerable to competition than many critics realize.
