Take Your Your Time On A Roadtrip

In the first place I’ve learned doing Roadtrips with hell bent for leather travel isn’t so great.

Low and Slow

Most importantly if the traveler has the time low and slow is the way to go.

2 Months From California to Oregon

For example I plan on taking almost two months to get to the California-Oregon border.

Furthermore I plan on taking the same approach to Oregon and Washington if possible.

Desert Mountain Beaches

Generally this podcast covers my trip for the deserts in Eastern California, to the mountains about thirty miles from San Diego and ultimately to the beaches south of Los Angeles.

History

Certainly there is history involved.

Spanish California

That is to say that the purpose I’ve selected for this trip is to learn more about the Mission System in California dating back to the Spanish.

Jedediah Smith

Even more one of the historical figures I am interested in is Jedediah Smith.

By all means Smith blazed many trails in his life.

Southern Route

But perhaps the most important exploration he accomplished was to find the southern route to California.

With this purpose in mind Smith was both saved and incarcerated by the Spanish at the mission at San Gabriel and at the Presidio in San Diego.

Mountain and Beach Campgrounds

All in all I got to spend some time at superb mountain campgrounds and on the Beach at Carlsbad, California.

Finally it’s amazing to me that I am only a short way into this Mega Roadtrip for 2025.

Oil Change

Firstly after trying several mechanics in LA I discovered no one wants to take the big old ambulance on for an oil change..

Secondly I called in an audible.

As a matter of fact my Brother and Sister in Law have a place in Big Bear. We came up last week after Thanksgiving.

And we planned to come back up this weekend anyway.

Welcome To Big Bear Country

So I decided to take a chance and find someone to do an oil change up at Big Bear.

Family and Fun

By the same token it is not only fun but really good for me to spend some time with family up here.

Furthermore the mooch-docking continues.

Basically what’s not to like.

Big Bear History

To begin with Freezing-My-Ass-Big-Bear-California-Bob Davis Podcast 1152 takes a very surface look at the history of this area.

From Native Americans to Miners and later Settlers. And Grizzlies.

The American West

In fact I am fascinated these days with the history of the American West.

Real History

Even more one of my conclusions is that the history of the settlement of the American West is in many ways the real history of the United States.

Tests

That is to say that the real test of the legal institutions of the new country back in the day was the push west starting with the Ohio River Valley.

People Led The Way

Significantly I think it’s fair too suggest that the people led the way during the decades before the Continental United States became a reality.

Controversy

Of course controversy is and has always been a factor in this part of the country.

Therefore I am not taking a position on any of these historical realities.

Natural Beauty

In addition California continues to amaze me with its natural beauty.

The Drive Up

Accordingly the drive up to Big Bear from LA starts with the usual traffic jams.

Mountain Views

Giving way to breathtaking mountain views afterward.

All in all there is a lot to talk about in this podcast.

Future Plans

in like manner I take a little time to talk about future plans.

Fly Over

Equally impressive was the experience of getting buzzed by my pilot nephew and the audio I was able to capture.

Short Distance Travel

To sum up being able to travel short distances and have a complete change of point of view is just what the doctor ordered for this nomad.

Finally there will be some planning for the future.

Big History For Thanksgiving

Above all Americans will be surprised to learn that Thanksgivings Per Se are not exclusively American.

In fact Pilgrims in Massachusetts and early settlers in Virginia would have brought the concept of a day of thanksgiving with them.

Because such days have been common going back eons.

Therefore counting one’s blessings on this day is the primary reason for the day.

Pressure Day

Unfortunately we have turned Thanksgiving into an affair fraught with pressure.

Pressure Season

Indeed the whole ‘holiday’ season from here on can get a little ridiculous.

Rad

So, having a nomad thanksgiving with a band of merry travelers under the Arizona sky can be pretty rad.

Even more my anxiousness this time of year always gives way to thinking about and sketching out plans for travel in the coming year.

Paradise

Compared to drunken uncles and screaming arguments about politics back home…

Nomad Thanksgiving is Paradise.

As a matter of fact I cherish this time of relative quiet to review my past travels…

And to hash over batteries, bathrooms and other issues…

Or places to check out in future travels…

With the crew.

Of course in between mouthfuls of store bought Thanksgiving Dinner and Pecan or Pumpkin Pie.

Surprisingly there will be no football games on TV or dad falling asleep on the couch this year.

Nomad Thanksgiving Is Like Eating At The Kid’s Table

Significantly it will be like eating Thanksgiving Dinner at the kid’s table so many years ago.

More Fun

Undeniably more fun than at the table with the ‘adults’.

That said it is unquestionably important to give thanks to friends…

And family…

And as a matter of fact fellow travelers.

No Pressure

All things considered it’s a great time because there’s no pressure.

In brief grab a couple of tables.

Throw out the paper plates.

Grab the dinner from the store.

Make a fresh pot of coffee.
