Updates for your weekend start with the controversy surrounding a police shooting and subsequent death of an 18 year old. Is the media fanning the flames? Should President Obama be interrupting his vacation to comment on the situation? Tensions have calmed somewhat with the introduction of State Police Security and the removal of a militarized local police force, at the request of Missouri Governor Nixon. Are our police too militarized? Some first hand memories of Saint Louis and surrounding communities may help people who have never been there visualize what is happening; Saint Louis is an aging industrial city, dealing with many different problems at once, with several surrounding small communities suffering as well, on the North Side. Might incompetent policing be at the core of this controversy and tragedy? Moreover, is it possible the root causes of discontent are economic, not racial? With economic growth stalling around the world, retail numbers dropping here in the US, are the policies directed at solving our economic problems working? If you watch television (broadcast or cable) these days, how would you know? What passes for ‘analysis’ is pure comedy, most of the time. Television short circuits your ability to reason, exciting your reptilian, emotional brain. As developments like this continue, what will the future look like for when we work, how we work, how we get paid, and how we consume. How’s your economy doing? Only 48 percent of Americans could lay their hands on four hundred dollars in cash, for an emergency! A third simply could not get ‘that much’. Meanwhile, investigations into waste, fraud and corruption in the US Federal Government are being thwarted, and an award winning ‘tele-work’ program at the US Patent office is rife with fraud; People who work for you — sorry…the ‘Government’ — working far fewer hours than they’re reporting and getting paid for. Wonder where the money is going? The big story; The airstrikes against the Islamic State heavy weapons engaging Iraqi Kurdistan. How are partisan political forces in the US reacting to the strikes, as Iraq begins to descend into chaos. What’s the takeaway? What politician is filling the void? Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Hillary Rodham Clinton, the clearest voice in Foreign Policy this week. The coldest summer since 2004 may turn into a hot September. Remember Radio Shack? It may be a thing of the past (even though some people think it already is … of course it has ‘radio’ in its name) by Christmas. Ebola! Can Ebola be transmitted through the air? Are Republican Congressmen spreading panic by suggesting illegals coming from countries with a history of Ebola outbreaks, could bring the disease into the United States? Is it wise to bring Ebola infected Americans back to the United States for treatment? Is the outbreak a ‘false flag’ attack, like everything else that happens? Do you know how to treat Ebola if you get it. Meanwhile, there are two potentially far more dangerous problems brewing with Russia and Ukraine, and The Islamic State. Russia has beefed up their troop strength on the border with Ukraine, while Armenia (supported by the Russians) and Azerbaijan (supported by NATO and Turkey) are clashing. The Islamic State has control of a Dam in Northern Iraq, and oil fields in Syria. What’s ‘The West’ doing? Nothing. What’s the remedy for US companies moving their HQ’s to low tax countries like Ireland and the Netherlands? How about an loyalty oath? Sound a little…fascist? It’s the latest suggestion from the Left on how to ‘make’ US Corporations pay their ‘Fair Share’. And what about the Economy? 4 percent GDP growth is good, but if you average 1st Quarter and 2nd Quarter growth you get about .9 percent. Still, moribund growth at best. While Obama can crow about it, we’ll see if he is crowing about it later this fall when 3rd quarter numbers are released. And, is the coldest summer in a long time depressing people?
