Six Thousand Miles of Back Roads Part2

Above all traveling six thousand miles on backroads across 15 states in sixty days is a mega trip and I’ll tell you all about it in Part 2 of this series. Details in Six-Thousand-Miles-Backroads-Part2-Bob Davis Podcast 1136.

Florida

Firstly we’ll start in Florida.

Where the most compelling evidence for over crowding and over development is getting kicked out of a state park…

Of course not to mention the traffic…

And expense of the so called Sunshine State.

Secondly take Florida off your travel list in season.

Undoubtedly Florida is overdeveloped.

However there are less populated and more quaint parts of Florida worth visiting and spending time.

Georgia

Hence we move on to Georgia

Certainly the Saint Simons Cumberland national seashores are beautiful.

For example Jekyll Island, Saint Simons, and the rest of the Georgia Coast has a lot of history.

South Carolina

Then in South Carolina I discovered some great dusty beach towns.

But I am not going to name those towns because I don’t want to see them ruined.

Otherwise they are there.

North Carolina

Subsequently the North Carolina coastline was fantastic

For example highway 179…

and Ocean Isle Beach, Oak Island on out to the Carolina Beach.

Finally the Ferries are low cost and so much fun.

Thereafter-Emerald Island, Atlantic Beach and the rest of the Outer Banks.

Ocracoke Island

Especially Ocracoke Island.

In due time you get on Route 12 which goes all the way up to Kill Devil Hills.

All in all The national Seashores keep these areas from being over developed.

The Old Dominion

Afterward I headed to Virginia on some personal business.

Most importantly here is the fact that I lived in the Old Dominion State for ten years at one point.

And Virginia has some great back roads.

Eventually I left Richmond headed up 460 to Bristol, Virginia.

Tennessee

Presently I left Bristol for Tennessee. Details again in Six-Thousand-Miles-Backroads-Part2-Bob Davis Podcast 1136

By all means the best of the latter parts of this trip was the navigation.

Using GPS Doesn’t Make A Road Trip

It must be remembered that most people enter a location on their GPS.

Eventually hitting start and driving on the Interstate until the GPS tells them they have arrived.

All things considered using GPS on the Interstates just isn’t any way to travel for me.

Maps

To this end I love maps.

And navigating with maps.

Nashville

In short I navigated to the Nashville area without all the traffic.

Because Nashville is booming.

Civil War History

Equally important is the amount of Civil War history in this part of the country.

Death and Destruction Monuments

That is to say it is food for thought considering popular culture these days.

Kentucky Does Not Like Shoulders

Accordingly I moved onto Kentucky which does not like shoulders on its roads.

Illinois

Then Southern Illinois.

As an illustration of the superiority of maps over GPS it’s easier to make changes in your travel plans.

Because you pull out a map and look for a route to emerge to a new destination.

Thus I headed North to the Chicago area to see friends.

Navigation

At this point another tremendous feat of navigation coming up on 51.

Cairo

On this occasion I came across Cairo, Illinois.

To begin this town is so beat down it was actually shocking.

In fact there’s a reason. Listen to Six-Thousand-Miles-Backroads-Part2-Bob Davis Podcast 1136.

(Editor’s Note: Some might blame flooding for the problems in Cairo but there’s more to the story.)

Neenah Wisconsin

In time I came straight up through Wisconsin to Neenah.

In conclusion much of this experience has been and is like a dream and now it is onto Western Wisconsin and rest!

And I wouldn’t have it any other way

American Heartland

Firstly the American Heartland is thriving. I’ve driven across 6 states so far. All back roads. Avoiding the major cities. Pure Travel Bliss, Details in American-Heartland-Bob Davis-Podcast-1108.

Navigating On The Fly

In addition I’ve been navigating on the fly.

Two Parts

Secondly this podcast is recorded in two parts.

Therefore two different locations in the American Heartland.

Hello Road

All things considered it is great to be back on the road.

Sea Of Green

In fact rolling through a sea of green…

Alone On Two Lanes

Even more most of the time no one else on the road but me…

Pure Travel Bliss

All of this must be remembered as truly pure travel bliss.

Don’t Listen To The Alarmists

Another key point the the talk about food shortages and other alarmist content.

Bursting At The Seams

As a matter of fact I am here to tell you the American Heartland is bursting at the seams with plenty as we near the harvest.

Value

It’s important to realize the value of actually ‘going down to the front’.

Rural America

That is to say going out to actually see what is going on in rural America is worth the trip.

Not A Fairy Tale

To be sure it’s not a fairy tale.

Contrast Surprises

But I am always surprised by the contrast of Urban Blight and the abundance of farm states.

Hitting The Road Again

Above all I have been stationary for months camped out on a Wisconsin lake shore.

So hitting the back roads for pure unfettered travel is fantastic.

New York State On The Horizon

I am henceforth headed to New York State to pick up my lithium power station from the Campulance Man.

Off Grid

I am truly off grid afterward heading for New York’s Pioneer district.

Love It

Thirdly this is what I do and I love it.

All in all I love traveling this way…

Learning

Furthermore I find opportunities to ask questions and learn.

Soul Killing Mind Numbing

Comparatively air travel and the interstates can be soul killing and mind numbing.

I do what I do for that reason.

Give It Up To Have It All

Give it up to have it all. Some people see how rich and free nomad life can be and wonder how it can be. I’ll tell you in Give-It-Up-Have-It-All-Bob Davis Podcast 1103.

Life Coaches

Certainly these days the life coaches and self help gurus like to tell us how to live our best lives.

How To Have It All

As much as they tell us how to have it all…

What Coaches Don’t Tell Us

In contrast they don’t tell us what we have to give up…

To have it all.

Lakeside

Presently I’m staying lakeside.

Summer’s Arrival

That is to say I get to experience the summer’s arrival in a way that all the other cabin owners up here might not be able to.

Life Back In The World

One of the things it’s important to realize is how complex and overwhelming life ‘back in the world can be’.

Lists And Shopping Trips

Such as lists and shopping trips.

Worry

And worries about money and jobs.

Nomad Life

On the other hand nomad life can be surprisingly ascetic.

Not Luxurious

Certainly nomad life isn’t luxurious.

Overlooked

In other words what we give up to have this freedom is often overlooked.

Count My Blessings

Therefore I’m taking this placid late spring early morning in front of the fire to count my blessings.

Share

And to share what I gave up…

To gain it all.

Contemplating Change

Although long time listeners will think of some of this as a review I think it’s worth thinking about regardless of what kind of change you’re contemplating.

Nevertheless you may be hesitating.

Firstly remember what the self help gurus say about having it all.

Jump

Secondly close your eyes and jump!

Final Analysis

In the final analysis I wanted to live an unorthodox lifestyle.

To sum up in order to achieve that…

I had to let it all go.

Wow

All things considered I never expected people to say wow…

You have it all.

But I kind of do.

Worth It?

With this in mind I didn’t really understand what I was giving up when I jumped.

But I do now.

And it was worth it.

Regrets?

In fact every now and then I might have a little bit of regret.

Balanced against what my life would have been like.

New Dimension

I’m glad I chose a new dimension.
