Summer-Peace-Bob Davis Podcast 1056

Summer Peace

Firstly Memorial Day signals the start of summer in the US and I think we all need to get some Summer Peace in 2022. We’ll talk about it in Summer-Peace-Bob Davis Podcast 1056.

I Know The Rules

Due to social media I am well aware of all the rules concerning virtue signalling for holidays like this one.

Up To You

But in this podcast I will leave the protocols of this extended weekend to you.

One Crisis To The Next

Secondly these days life for many Americans is one crisis to the next.

Time For A Break

Therefore it is time for a break.

Peace

That is to say we all need a moment’s peace.

Podcasting For A Long Time

Above all I have been doing podcasts for a long time.

And it is rare for me to be able to do a podcast on any topic as succinctly as this one.

Back In The World

Certainly life ‘back in the world’ is standing in line.

Not So Good

Or waiting for hours to talk to an actual human being.

Even more it’s strapped budgets and time schedules.

In addition work projects that don’t seem to make any sense.

Who’s In Charge?

Finally I get the sense that those in charge have no idea how to even explain ‘the problem’ much less fix it.

Idea Of Peace

As a result I decided to dedicate this first official podcast of summer to the idea of peace.

Summer Peace.

That is to say getting a moment of peace for yourself this summer.

Makes No Sense

In the same vein the world doesn’t make sense to most of us.

Nomad World

On the other hand in the nomad world things are a little different.

For example we spend a lot of time talking about our rigs.

And planning delicious dinners.

Cooperation and Consensus

Moreover while we talk about things back home we seek cooperation and consensus rather than winning an argument.

Gratitude

After that we’re just grateful.

In short I recorded Summer-Peace-Bob Davis Podcast 1056 on memorial day to share some memories and a genuine wish for some summer peace for you…

And everyone.

Summer Peace.

Get Some.

Farewell Boy Scouts America-Podcast 724

The Boy Scouts of America recently changed its name. The reason? Scouts USA will admit girls. These days a decision like that can kick off a firestorm of criticism. There’s even a new Christian alternative to the Boy Scouts. For my best friends and I, BSA was all about camping. We’ll talk about it in Farewell Boy Scouts America-Podcast 724.

Best Friends Like None Other

I had two best friends growing up. Both of them invited me into the Boy Scouts. The other day one of them texted me, concerned that the Boy Scouts would not admit girls. “Are you gonna do a podcast about that?”, he wondered. I said I didn’t think so. The idea of a podcast about changes in our social institutions though, stuck with me.

Summer Memories

Especially relevant is how summer brings back memories. It’s warm already in Minnesota and that makes me think about my best friends, camp outs, summer camp and fun. For us, that’s what the Boy Scouts were. So I’ll share some stories about our campouts in Farewell Boy Scouts America-Podcast 724.

Nonconformist Scoutmaster

What’s more, as I researched and thought about this podcast I realized how important our scoutmaster was to all of us. It’s not what you’d expect. Our scoutmaster and the men who watched over us were anything but conformists.

No Patience For Rules and Regulations in 1970’s America

As world war two vets, our scoutmasters weren’t about to take crap from anyone. Moreover, they didn’t have much patience for bureaucracy, rules and regulations. What they did was make sure we were safe, had a good time, and took care of each other. They also stood up for us, celebrated us and had our back. In Farewell Boy Scouts America-Podcast 724.

Changing Institutions

Most noteworthy to this podcast is the idea that institutions like the Boy Scouts are changing. Crumbling even. There’s no shortage of criticism for ‘Scouts USA’ from commentators who make sure to tell the reader they were Eagle Scouts and went on to Explorers. We didn’t. In fact we thought ‘Super Scouts’ were kind of weird.

Friends For Life

For us it was all about camping and the kind of friendship none of us will have again. I think it was that way with our scoutmasters and the fathers of the kids who came to the campouts too. For me, I don’t mind leaving it all behind and keeping those times as memories. As Stephen King once wrote, “I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus. Does anyone?”

My sentiments exactly.

Was it the Boy Scouts? Or was it us?

Podcast 503

Slipping Into Summer. Hard to believe, after a long upper midwestern winter, that we are Slipping Into Summer. As the Memorial Day Weekend approaches, some thoughts about the origins of ‘Decoration Day’, Arlington National Cemetery, the Civil War, and our modern day commemoration of those who have given their lives in service to the United States. This is not a national holiday of celebration. It might be suggested it is in fact supposed to be a sober, if not somber day to reflect on the sacrifice of those who did not return home. Some people confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day. If you’re on the radio, or in public media that is a mistake you will make once. On Veterans Day we honor all those who have served. On Memorial Day we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. With all that, it is still the beginning of summer — even though summer doesn’t start until June 21st — and for kids still in school it means a week or so of school left, depending on how many snow days may have accrued during the brutal winter. It brings back memories for this podcaster. Memories of summers that stretched out like a sea of opportunity and ended all too quickly on Labor Day. In the Upper Midwest, this time is ‘GO’ time, especially for kids, because our summers are so short and sweet. The end of May can be cold, rainy and unfriendly and quite uncomfortable if you are opening the lake cabin and putting in the dock. The end of May can also be warm, sunny and friendly, and Memorial Day kicks it off with its ad hoc parades, and BBQ’s … the first three day weekend of the summer. So people might be forgiven for not remembering some of us will be privately thinking about those they lost, who will not be able to enjoy the great spring weather, the parades and BBQ’s. Here’s to them. Sponsored by X Government Cars and Ryan Plumbing and Heating of Saint Paul. (Editor’s Note: In describing the mast of the USS Minneapolis, which is at Lake Calhoun, I confused the Cruiser, USS Minneapolis with two US Navy Submarines currently in service. The USS Minnesota is a Virginia Class Submarine, and the USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul is a Los Angeles Class submarine.)
