Nomad-Setbacks-New-Adventures-Bob Davis Podcast 1049

Nomad Setbacks and New Adventures

Firstly every now and then there are setbacks and new adventures for nomads. They’re unavoidable. Not fun when they happen though. Status update from the road in Nomad-Setbacks-New-Adventures-Bob Davis Podcast 1049.

Still On The Road? Everything Is Fine

Secondly as long as your rig isn’t at the bottom of a lake or ravine everything is fine.

Emergency Fund

Certainly you’ll have to pay.

And you know that.

Not The End Of The World

But it’s not the end of the world.

How Could This Have Happened?

Even more you kick yourself wondering how ‘this’ could have happened.

Law Of Fast Forgetting

Therefore it’s normal to get down on yourself when the law of fast forgetting is in effect.

Get Your Road Chops Back

In other words if you stayed in one place all winter and weren’t on the road there are things we all get used to doing on the road.

Easy To Forget

It’s easy to forget these things when you start traveling again.

Grand Entrance

For example making a grand entrance by driving down what looked like a shallow hill.

Turns Into A Sand Dune

However that shallow hill was a sand dune.

Time For A Tow Truck

Meanwhile as I waited for the inevitable two truck to pull me out I got philosophical.

Learn and Relearn

After that it was an evening of talking about how often we learn and relearn life lessons very quickly out here.

Life Lessons Take Time

That is to say sometimes life lessons take years to incorporate.

Learning Faster In Nomadland

In short the same lesson that takes years can take a few minutes out here.

Grateful

Finally I am grateful to be on the road again.

Interrupting My Reverie

Certainly I hate it when my reverie is interrupted by some stupid act.

But all is well.

Not A Bowl Of Cherries

To sum up nomad life isn’t a bowl of cherries.

SlabCity USA and The Salton Sea

Above all this part of California is not a resort and SlabCity or the Salton Sea is no exception. Details in SlabCity-USA-Salton-Sea-Bob Davis Podcast 1047.

Slab City Gets A Lot Of Media

Firstly I have seen articles about Slab City USA for years.

Hot Springs

Even more a person appeared in our camp in Arizona recently and insisted we go to Slab City ‘if only for the hot springs‘.

New Experience

Secondly I have never experienced the hot springs.

Short Distance

And since high fuel prices are slowing everyone’s roll we thought heading a short distance over to SlabCity USA was a good plan.

Not A Resort

Most importantly Slab City itself is not a resort.

Of course there are some RV campgrounds.

America’s Last Free Place

But most of the people at Slab City are not your average RV Life Community.

Slabbies

Certainly the so called ‘Slabbies’ are my kind of people.

Don’t Bring The Million Dollar Rig…Or Bring It

On the other hand they might not be your kind of people if you’re rig is an eight hundred thousand dollar coach.

Salton Sea

In addition there is the whole Salton Sea experience.

Mistake Lake

For example The Salton Sea itself was created by mistake.

Mecca For 1960’s Tourists Is Dying

Moreover the sea is dying although it was a mecca for tourists back in the day.

Which is kind of cool.

Details in SlabCity-USA-Salton-Sea-Bob Davis Podcast 1047.

Leave Some Attractions

Meanwhile I did not visit the so called Slab City Monument for some of the other attractions here.

We Always Come Back

In short I have learned over the years to leave some experiences because we always come back.

Novelty

And of course I want my travel experiences to have some novelty to them as time goes on.

Partial To Hot Springs

Further I am kind of partial to the hot springs.

Finally a little primer and what you’ll see and some of the people you will meet if you’re going to visit SlabCity USA.

Travel These Days

To sum up I am taking shorter trips as I travel these days.

Deeper Experiences

On the other hand I am seeing and getting to know places I want to come back to.

Isn’t that what it’s all about?

(Editor’s Note: Every now and then I make a silly mistake. I don’t know why but I said Slab City is “Something like six hundred THOUSAND acres”, which would make it very large indeed, even for a former Marine Base. Slab City USA is in fact something like 632 acres. Still pretty large, right?)

Celebrating-One-Year-As-Nomad-Bob Davis Podcast 1025

Celebrating One Year As A Nomad

Above all finding the right time and place to celebrate one year as a nomad is a challenge. Sooner or later you just have to record. Therefore listen to the celebration from Scottsdale, Arizona in Celebrating-One-Year-As-Nomad-Bob Davis Podcast 1025.

All A Blur

Firstly it’s all a blur to me.

Never Regretted It

Secondly I have never regretted selling, donating or throwing away everything I owned to hit the road.

Overall Mission

Even more lately I have been working on an overall mission statement for the second year of nomad travel.

Enlightenment

However a friend told me recently she thought I was searching for enlightenment.

Halloween 2020

Maybe seeking enlightenment will do for this first year of nomad travel, starting on Halloween Night 2020.

Felt Trapped Back Home

In Celebrating-One-Year-As-Nomad-Bob Davis Podcast 1025 I talk about feeling trapped back home.

Suburban Lifestyle

And feeling there was nothing keeping me in the suburban lifestyle.

Learned A Lot

Certainly I have learned a lot this first year of solid nomad travel.

For example frustrations and problems are unavoidable.

But you learn to deal with them as they come up.

On The Road

In addition in the beginning I was on the road a lot.

Hit all the lower 48.

Death In The Family

During the New Year’s I dealt with a death in the family.

Start All Over Again

After that it seemed like I had to start all over again.

How Nomads Are Changed By Travel

In short all the podcasts since Halloween 2020 have dealt with the internal processes and experiences of nomad travel.

No Politics

In the same vein I am proud that none of these podcasts have focused on political issues.

Nothing But Travel

Moreover nothing but travel.

No Advice On Your Rig

On the other hand I don’t tell you how to get to the Grand Canyon or how to empty your black water tanks.

No Wrenching Or Builds

To clarify I don’t do RV wrenching and won’t talk about my ‘build’.

But what almost no one talks about is how this kind of lifestyle effects people on a day to day basis.

And I think there’s a place for that kind of talk about the nomad lifestyle.

Small Towns

Finally I have to say the one big takeaway is how much I have fallen in love with the everyday small towns in this country.

The People

The people you meet on the back roads.

The Towns

For instance towns like Ely Nevada or Lubbock Texas.

Search For America

In short if you’re searching for America and you decide to do it as a nomad I think you’ll learn a few things.

Fact is the United States is a vibrant and complex economy and an incredible people.

On the other hand the America we see through our small screens and social media seems like our worst effort.

Can’t Get Enough

To sum up whether I’m in a truck stop or magnificent national forest I can’t get enough of the road.
