Fourth, Fireworks and Eclipse!

You don’t often get a July Fourth, Fireworks and an Eclipse all rolled together these days. Let’s enjoy it together in July-Fourth-Fireworks-Eclipse-Radio-Bob Davis Podcast 938.

Karen Ruins The Fourth

Firstly it seems to me like the scolds have ruined yet another holiday.

No Tedious History Lessons Here

What used to be an oasis of fun has been turned into a tedious history lesson.

Do Your Own Research

Secondly do your own research about our glorious or tawdry past. I’m certainly not going to waste your time.

Leaving The History Lessons Out This Year

Most importantly I leave the history lessons out in July-Fourth-Fireworks-Eclipse-Radio-Bob Davis Podcast 938.

The 1700’s. Yay! Now Back To The Fireworks!

Certainly I’ll share a few facts about the 1700’s. That’s about it.

Better To Share Stories Of Fourth’s Past

However I think it’s more fun to share some stories of fourths I remember as a kid. Even more fun to do it while the eclipse gets rolling and the kids shoot fireworks in the park.

Great American Detroit Rolling Steel

For example for some reason I seem to remember all the wonderful cars from back in the day in my stories. Giant hunks of American Steel.

Backyard Parties! Martinis! Beer! Coffee! Cigarettes!

In addition those backyard parties with my grandfather’s sales guys.

Best Memories Are Childhood Memories

Truth is to a kid, everything is bigger than life. Especially the smells. Martinis. Beer. Coffee. Cigarettes. Cigars. Even Perfume.

Nostalgia Beats Bitching and Moaning

Finally it sure seems to me like reminiscing is better therapy in today’s world, than bitching and moaning about interpretations of the signing of the declaration. Besides, those guys in the park have fireworks!

Nothing More American Than A Perfect Summer Night!

To sum up don’t forget! A perfect summer night. Fireworks. An eclipse. The entire neighborhood partying.

(Editor’s Note: Yes I do refer to the American Colonies circa 1776 as ‘The United States’. My mistake, but perhaps understandable considering the amount of fireworks in the background. Obviously we did not become These United States until after the ratification of the US Constitution in 1788, and the Bill of Rights later in 1790.)

What could be more American than that?

We all agree on one thing. There’s a lot of crazy to go around these days. It’s especially relevant and important to remember it’s summer. Join me on the deck and we’ll talk about it in Pause Crazy News Coverage-Summer Stories-Bob Davis Podcast 734.

Taco Night!

Taco night at the Broadcast Bunker ends on the deck, with fresh hot coffee, as the rain rolls in.

Stream Of Consciousness

As a long time podcaster I prefer preparation and even writing content. However subscribers and listeners tell me they love my free wheeling stream of consciousness style.

Furthermore it takes a lot of thought to get to the nub of what is near and dear to talk about in a podcast. Easy for me to talk about politics and society. Maybe because politics is always top of mind.

Awash In News Coverage

To me, valuable content is just beneath that crust of all this political talk. Moreover society is awash in so called news coverage that ends up forcing us all deeper into our ‘positions’. The great thing about podcasting is, I don’t have to keep banging away on a political topic. I’ve done plenty of unique podcasts on society and politics that are still current.

Then I remember it’s summer!

In the Upper Midwest summer is short and sweet. Most of all this year we’ve had a lot of rain and it has been hot. That means thick leaves and bugs and lots of green.

No Shoes And Running Free

Summer nights make me think of summer stories. Spending summer with no shoes. Days at the community pool. Bike rides. Running free from morning til late at night. Sitting on the front steps listening to the radio all night.

All of this, kicked off from the last day of school and running straight through to Labor Day.

Summer Nights

My experience has been that it doesn’t matter when someone grew up. Summer nights are always good for thinking about those days when we had endless freedom and possibilities.

Remember Your Summer Stories

Finally considering the intensity, the yelling and screaming, the rancor that passes for ‘news’, it sure made me feel good to do this podcast. Listen and remember your summer stories, no matter when you grew up. And all this kicked off because someone asked me why I don’t wear shoes in the summer.

Value-Persuasion-Disruption-Live At The Mall-Podcast 687

These days we seldom think about what is valuable. We want the newest. The latest. Consume. Enjoy. Move on. Spending a day at the mall makes me wonder what has real value today. In Value-Persuasion-Disruption-Live At The Mall-Podcast 687.

At The Mall

We’re at certainly one of the oldest indoor malls. Southdale Mall, in Edina, Minnesota. I used to come to Southdale a lot. Not so much anymore. While malls in general have fallen on hard times, Southdale is still home base for me.

Things Change And Stay The Same

Shopping at the mall pretty much like it always was. While decorations have changed the idea stays the same. Especially relevant is the idea that all the stores are more closely defined. Seems like more clothing and accessories than back in the day of the JC Penny on one end of the mall, and Sears on the other. We’ll talk about it in Value-Persuasion-Disruption-Live At The Mall-Podcast 687.

If That’s All There Is My Friend Then Let’s Keep Dancing

What is valuable to us these days? Many things are disposable. Software and hardware upgrades feed buying the newest and latest. The idea of a waffle iron or heavy coat that lasted a lifetime is in the past. We discuss real value in Value-Persuasion-Disruption-Live At The Mall-Podcast 687.

Brand Names and Quality

Words like Value evoke brand images in every generation. For some it’s a car, or a consumer item. For others value triggers thoughts of clothing, an accessory or something that seemed to last forever. Real value though, can also be intangibles. Attributes attached to people. ‘Things’ we have to earn.

Missing Intangibles

Seems like these days so called intangibles are taking on a great deal more significance. We miss integrity, trustworthiness and respect. We crave time and forget the value of health and the people we care most about.

Beautiful Downtown Fill In The Blank

Malls are designed to evoke feelings and images of the old time markets. Walking through the mall is supposed to feel like the old time main street and its row of shops. The watchmaker and jeweler, tailor and shoe store, outdoor store and record shop. The texture and surfaces make us feel comfortable and somehow like we’re at home.

How Do You Spell Happy?

In conclusion I could suggest that the ‘things’ that make us feel secure and happy aren’t things at all. So, in Value-Persuasion-Disruption-Live At The Mall-Podcast 687, some thought starters for your Christmas and New Year’s season about what’s really important.
