Bay State Ocean State

My friend Jack Casey joins the Bob Davis Podcast in Bay State Ocean State. Last in the series of podcasts about New England Travel in Bay-State-Ocean-State-Bob Davis Podcast 1010.

Loving New England

Most importantly I am surprised at how much I like New England.

From New York To Maine

Even more from Upstate New York to Maine it’s just been amazing.

Two Friends Get Together To Podcast

Consequently when I got together with friends in Massachusetts it’s natural we’d do a podcast.

Go Way Back

Firstly Jack and I go way back in the radio business.

First Rule Of Fight Club…

Secondly we don’t do what every other radio person does when they’re on a podcast.

We Don’t Talk About Fight Club

Talk about radio!

Growing Up In New England

To clarify Casey grew up in Rural Upstate New York and has spent many years living and working all over New England.

History And Telling Stories

As a result he knows his New England history and tells some great stories about growing up and working in some of the most storied places in the United States, let alone New England.

Industrial Revolution Tour In Reverse

As you know I’ve been heading east traveling across the areas most effected by the march of the Industrial Revolution, which began in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

Ocean State

After that we’re finally here in the Ocean State, where it all started.

Not All A Party

On the other hand the history of this region isn’t all balloons and birthday cake.

Dark History

That is to say there’s some terrible history in Rhode Island they’re trying to work through these days.

We’ll explain in Bay-State-Ocean-State-Bob Davis Podcast 1010.

And The Clams, Lobster and Ice Cream

Even more I am here to tell you the stories about the local full bellied clams, roadside Lobster and Ice Cream are all true.

Ate A Lot

Certainly I ate a lot during my visit. Foods I have not been eating since I’ve been on the protein diet.

Who Can Resist?

But who can resist baked beans and Italian sausage, a local staple. Lobster. Clams and Fries. Blueberry Pancakes and gallons of coffee.

Starving Myself Now

Finally now I am back on the road and starving myself!

History Is Everywhere

To sum up and in all seriousness. The history here really is everywhere.

Just driving through small towns becomes a huge education.

Going Back To The 1600’s

In conclusion it’s just hard to believe people settled out here in the mid to late 1600’s.

Factories and Mills In The Late 1700’s

Mills and factories started producing goods in the mid to late seventeen hundreds and early eighteen hundreds.

Twentieth Century Powerhouse

Furthermore by the twentieth century this part of the country was hitting on all eight cylinders, making all kinds of products for the world.

Family Stories

Jack’s got some family stories about working in the mills and the pride of work and place that was so important in this part of the country.

July-Fourth-Fireworks-Eclipse-Radio-Bob Davis Podcast 938

Fourth, Fireworks and Eclipse!

You don’t often get a July Fourth, Fireworks and an Eclipse all rolled together these days. Let’s enjoy it together in July-Fourth-Fireworks-Eclipse-Radio-Bob Davis Podcast 938.

Karen Ruins The Fourth

Firstly it seems to me like the scolds have ruined yet another holiday.

No Tedious History Lessons Here

What used to be an oasis of fun has been turned into a tedious history lesson.

Do Your Own Research

Secondly do your own research about our glorious or tawdry past. I’m certainly not going to waste your time.

Leaving The History Lessons Out This Year

Most importantly I leave the history lessons out in July-Fourth-Fireworks-Eclipse-Radio-Bob Davis Podcast 938.

The 1700’s. Yay! Now Back To The Fireworks!

Certainly I’ll share a few facts about the 1700’s. That’s about it.

Better To Share Stories Of Fourth’s Past

However I think it’s more fun to share some stories of fourths I remember as a kid. Even more fun to do it while the eclipse gets rolling and the kids shoot fireworks in the park.

Great American Detroit Rolling Steel

For example for some reason I seem to remember all the wonderful cars from back in the day in my stories. Giant hunks of American Steel.

Backyard Parties! Martinis! Beer! Coffee! Cigarettes!

In addition those backyard parties with my grandfather’s sales guys.

Best Memories Are Childhood Memories

Truth is to a kid, everything is bigger than life. Especially the smells. Martinis. Beer. Coffee. Cigarettes. Cigars. Even Perfume.

Nostalgia Beats Bitching and Moaning

Finally it sure seems to me like reminiscing is better therapy in today’s world, than bitching and moaning about interpretations of the signing of the declaration. Besides, those guys in the park have fireworks!

Nothing More American Than A Perfect Summer Night!

To sum up don’t forget! A perfect summer night. Fireworks. An eclipse. The entire neighborhood partying.

(Editor’s Note: Yes I do refer to the American Colonies circa 1776 as ‘The United States’. My mistake, but perhaps understandable considering the amount of fireworks in the background. Obviously we did not become These United States until after the ratification of the US Constitution in 1788, and the Bill of Rights later in 1790.)

What could be more American than that?

Peak Summer

We’re living through a pretty intense time these days. Moreover I noticed something I call ‘peak summer‘ recently. It’s a pristine moment when time seems to stop and you can’t get enough. Learn more in Peak-Summer-Triggers-Transformation-Bob Davis Podcast 847.

A Time To Transcend The BS

In addition I think summer has a transformational quality. You can transcend all the BS. Especially in that moment when evening turns to dusk, the moon rises, and night starts to come on.

Power of Sound Gets It Across

I am fascinated with the power of sound. You can’t really film peak summer. Oh sure, some movies capture it. Pictures sometimes get it. On the other hand recording peak summer bottles the experience.

Evening Becomes Night and You Are There

As a result I have been out recording blocks of sound. In Peak-Summer-Triggers-Transformation-Bob Davis Podcast 847 listen to evening become night. You’ll have to put up with my explanation of why summer is transformative and some summer memories.

Summer Memories

I first experienced peak summer when I was a kid. Seems like around twelve, thirteen or fourteen. When you hit that age there is a natural separation from the family and a yearning for freedom.

Freedom and Independence

Maybe due to age, maybe by my insistence, my parents relaxed the rules a little during those times. I got to stay out later. Spent the night on the front porch, or in my fort in the backyard.

A Night Owl Returns To His Roots

I’ve always been a night owl. Consequently I spent a lot of time on the front stoop on those summer nights, listening to the radio and dreaming the way a kid dreams about the future.

It’s most noteworthy that these days I seem to have returned to those halcyon days. The glow of the street lights. Wind in the trees. The sound of trains in the big switching yard in my home down.

Don’t Forget To Enjoy It

We’re at the moment of peak summer right  now. Enjoy It.

Magic

I don’t have to tell people who live in the Upper Midwest, it’s a fleeting and magical moment. But I can share it with you…
