Is-Nomad-Life-Over?-Bob Davis Podcast-1129

Is Nomad Life Over?

Firstly it’s a good time to ask Is Nomad Life Over? Details in Is-Nomad-Life-Over?-Bob Davis Podcast-1129.

Fully Committed

Secondly while I remain fully committed to the nomad lifestyle I wonder whether the trend is starting to fade.

Reality Bites

Certainly the longer I do something the more I see the reality in it.

Community

But these days I am not feeling the much vaunted nomad community as much as I used to.

Social Media Presence

Another key point are the Vanlife and Nomadlife Instagram posts.

As well as YouTube videos.

And videos on other platforms.

False Reality?

Undeniably the reality is often not the picture presented in social media.

Unquestionably there are difficult days.

Sublime Moments

Notwithstanding those difficult days there are truly sublime moments.

In fact that’s why I still want to live the nomad life.

Trend Starting To Wear

In view of all this though it feels like the trend is starting to wear.

To put it another way I am seeing a lot more RV people out here these days than straight up nomads.

Attendance Spotty

In addition attendance at some venerated ‘nomad’ events has been spotty.

Economic Hardship

This is said to be on the account of economic hardship.

On the other hand it seems to me more Americans are being called back into the work place.

Therefore barnstorming around the country isn’t as easy as it used to be.

With that said it doesn’t mean there is a great desire to be physically present.

But there it is.

Meaning and Purpose

Even more I think there might be some questions about what it all means.

In fact a great purpose.

Negative Experiences

On the negative side I’ve had some experiences and there have been some situations out here this year that should raise eyebrows.

Sustainable

All in all one wonders what is needed to create a sustainable nomad experience?

Eventually further technology improvements will only make nomad life easier and more productive.

In the meantime we’ll see you out there.

SlabCity-USA-Salton-Sea-Bob Davis Podcast 1047

SlabCity USA and The Salton Sea

Above all this part of California is not a resort and SlabCity or the Salton Sea is no exception. Details in SlabCity-USA-Salton-Sea-Bob Davis Podcast 1047.

Slab City Gets A Lot Of Media

Firstly I have seen articles about Slab City USA for years.

Hot Springs

Even more a person appeared in our camp in Arizona recently and insisted we go to Slab City ‘if only for the hot springs‘.

New Experience

Secondly I have never experienced the hot springs.

Short Distance

And since high fuel prices are slowing everyone’s roll we thought heading a short distance over to SlabCity USA was a good plan.

Not A Resort

Most importantly Slab City itself is not a resort.

Of course there are some RV campgrounds.

America’s Last Free Place

But most of the people at Slab City are not your average RV Life Community.

Slabbies

Certainly the so called ‘Slabbies’ are my kind of people.

Don’t Bring The Million Dollar Rig…Or Bring It

On the other hand they might not be your kind of people if you’re rig is an eight hundred thousand dollar coach.

Salton Sea

In addition there is the whole Salton Sea experience.

Mistake Lake

For example The Salton Sea itself was created by mistake.

Mecca For 1960’s Tourists Is Dying

Moreover the sea is dying although it was a mecca for tourists back in the day.

Which is kind of cool.

Details in SlabCity-USA-Salton-Sea-Bob Davis Podcast 1047.

Leave Some Attractions

Meanwhile I did not visit the so called Slab City Monument for some of the other attractions here.

We Always Come Back

In short I have learned over the years to leave some experiences because we always come back.

Novelty

And of course I want my travel experiences to have some novelty to them as time goes on.

Partial To Hot Springs

Further I am kind of partial to the hot springs.

Finally a little primer and what you’ll see and some of the people you will meet if you’re going to visit SlabCity USA.

Travel These Days

To sum up I am taking shorter trips as I travel these days.

Deeper Experiences

On the other hand I am seeing and getting to know places I want to come back to.

Isn’t that what it’s all about?

(Editor’s Note: Every now and then I make a silly mistake. I don’t know why but I said Slab City is “Something like six hundred THOUSAND acres”, which would make it very large indeed, even for a former Marine Base. Slab City USA is in fact something like 632 acres. Still pretty large, right?)

Uncertainty-Principle-Bob Davis Podcast 1039

The Uncertainty Principle

Firstly the uncertainty principle is about uncertainty in our world these days. Nomads deal with uncertainty every day. For more information check out Uncertainty-Principle-Bob Davis Podcast 1039.

New Campsite

Secondly as if to pay off on the Uncertainty Principle I had to move to a new campsite this week.

Bureau Of Land Management Rule

Certainly the rule on Bureau of Land Management free campgrounds is 14 days and you move on.

Pushing The Rules

I pushed the rule a little spending nearly three months in one location. The good news? I can come back in two weeks!

Community

On the other hand I learned a lot about the nomad community.

Life Long Friends

And made a lot of hopefully life long friends.

True Grit

Even more I personally witnessed resourcefulness and true grit among my full time nomad friends.

Happy To Move

Therefore I am not in the least upset that I had to move.

Passes Rule

Most importantly the ranger was great. We had a nice conversation about all the many sites one can access with a Long Term Visitor pass, which I possess.

Uncertainty

Above all it made me think about the uncertainty we all feel about how things are going.

Bricks And Sticks

Most importantly back in the so called bricks and sticks world.

Back In The World

Or ‘back in the world’ as I like to say.

Caution No Certainty Ahead

Moreover I do not think any of us are going to wake up some sunny morning in the near future feeling certainty.

In fact I don’t think that’s going to happen for at least one generation.

Stable and Certain World Closed For One Generation

So if you’re an adult now perhaps you’ll be able to contribute to a more stable and certain world.

Living With Uncertainty

However for the time being we’re going to have to live with uncertainty. Learn more in Uncertainty-Principle-Bob Davis Podcast 1039.

Unpacking At The New Campsite

Finally join me in this podcast as I unpack and all the mats and boxes of firewood. The groceries. Chair. You know.

Don’t Be Fooled By Cheerful Nomads

And we’ll talk about how nomads deal with uncertainty in an almost cheerful manner.

We Attack Change

In the same vein I revisit the idea that to attack change we have to observe and orient ourselves to a new situation more often than back in the world.

Make Quick Decisions

In addition we then have to make quick decisions and act on them.

Have A Lot Of Grit

Aside from the fires and pot lucks there’s a lot of grit out here in the land of the nomad.

And Surprising Flexibility

In the same vein the flexibility and willingness to embrace change is often visible among people out here you’d never expect.

Life Turning Points

In short there are three turning points in everyone’s life that can lay us out.

Death, Divorce and losing a job.

Easier On The Road

To sum up I have to feel like it is easier out here to deal with that kind of trauma and learn to embrace the future as a result.

More Fun

In conclusion I certainly can’t predict the future. But for me living out here on the road is actually easier and more fun than back in the world.
