Bonnie-Clyde-1930s-America-Bob Davis Podcast 830

Nothing Sweeter Than The 1930’s

If you study history you know we all have our favorite periods. These days I turn more and more to 1930’s America. Specifically the story of Bonnie and Clyde. Learn more in Bonnie-Clyde-1930s-America-Bob Davis Podcast 830.

Highwaymen

There’s a new movie on Netflix called ‘Highwaymen‘. The movie details the search for Bonnie and Clyde and their inevitable end and stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson. I like this movie because it does a better job telling more of the real story, than other efforts.

The Ford V8

Especially relevant to the story is the automobile and the then new national highway system. For Clyde Barrow there was no equal to the then brand new Ford V-8. This was Barrow’s number one choice to steal. Bonnie Parker died with a map of the old national highway system on her lap.

National Highway System

Most noteworthy Barrow was famous for covering as much as a thousand miles in one day in one of his stolen Ford V-8’s. The duo sped across New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota and Kansas on those brand new blacktopped two lane interstate highways, and many a dirt road or field during their crime sprees.

Depression and Crime

The height of the depression in the early 1930’s comes down to us in faded black and white photos, and speed graphic newspaper photos taken in tourist camps, abandoned farms and failed banks. Yet the people then, experienced it in color. Find out why this era fascinates me in Bonnie-Clyde-1930s-America-Bob Davis Podcast 830.

Criminal Minds

Finally there is this question of criminal behavior. Bonnie and Clyde have a special place in 1930’s history. To a certain degree their story line is a lie. Foolish young people pushed into a life of crime by life circumstances? Or criminals that terrorized local communities across the rural Midwest?

Mystery and Legend

In conclusion Highwaymen, three books I read before for a podcast I did about the mystery and legend of Texas Ranger Frank Hamer. Those links are here. I did these podcasts because so many inaccuracies and lies have become part of Bonnie and Clyde lore.

Authentic Sauna Experience-Bob Davis Podcast 817

Once and awhile you find a gem in the world of podcasting. These days it’s hard to be happy. What if I told you inner peace and happiness is just a sauna away? We’ll do it in Authentic Sauna Experience-Bob Davis Podcast 817.

Leading Sauna Authority

Glenn Auerbach is the leading authority on everything sauna in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, if not Minnesota. Glenn has been building saunas and promoting the sauna experience for years.

Build An Authentic Finnish Sauna

Moreover one thing Glenn is fond of saying is, if you have one hundred square feet in your backyard, you can build an authentic Finnish sauna. In addition Glenn provides research and resources for you at his website and blog here.

If You Want To Be Happy…

Recently the New York Times published a story which ranked individual happiness by country. Finland was number one. The US did not rank very high in this study. The Times’ suggestion? If you want to be happy, move to Finland.

The Secret To Processing Your Life

Auerbach does not agree. He says if Americans would spend time in a sauna the way Finns do, we’d be able to process our lives more efficiently and be happier. The sauna is an excellent tool for processing.

Northern European Immigrants and The Northern US

Finally up here in the far north we love our cold weather climate. With an ethnic history of families who came here from Northern Europe, the similarities between life in the arctic circle and Minnesota can be a little daunting.

Painting A Picture of Pure Natural Beauty

Honestly, Glenn is so good at painting a romantic picture of fjords and islands, and builds a beautiful sauna. But there’s more. In conclusion, Auerbach also knows his stuff.

So we’ll cover the question of whether you should build a sauna, from the authentic experience all the way to the scientifically proven results.

It was a pleasure to have Glenn Auerbach on the podcast. I know I want a sauna for next year’s two months of below zero weather!

Sub Zero Temperatures-Yoga-Body Effects-Bob Davis Podcast 805

Minnesotans love to talk about the weather. These days sub zero weather in the upper midwest is a fact of life. How does it effect your yoga practice? Find out in Sub Zero Temperatures-Yoga-Body Effects-Bob Davis Podcast 805.

Minus 32 is a lot colder than 17

First of all when it comes to yoga there’s a big difference between 17 to 20 degrees and 30 degrees below zero. By the way, we’re talking Fahrenheit here, not Celsius.

Our Bodies Don’t Adjust As Quickly As Our Minds

Furthermore we practice in rooms heated sometimes above one hundred degrees. In contrast our bodies are still adjusted to sub zero temperatures.

One Hundred and Thirty Degree Temperature Difference

Hard to believe there is a a one hundred a thirty degree temperature difference between outside and the studio when it is 30 below zero.

Easier To Practice When It’s Thirty

Moreover outside temps see sawing between below zero real temperatures and warm spells of above thirty. This too effects my practice. Yes it’s a lot easier to practice when it’s thirty outside.

Falling On Ice

Finally we’re all dealing with physical exertion beyond spring, fall and summer. Falling on the ice. Shoveling snow. Ice Fishing. Winter fun. They all help get through a tough season but take their toll.

Daily Practice Means Daily Practice

In conclusion it doesn’t matter how cold it is, I am still going out to join the rest of the community in practice. Being committed to a daily practice sometimes means pushing yourself, but it is so worth it. Some days are easier than others but I always feel great after practice.

See you in the studio
