Summer Storms In The Midwest

Warmer weather in the Upper Midwest is most notable for severe weather. In addition all through the middle part of the US in the summer storms can be even more dangerous. Learn more in Storm-Chasing-Traffic-Jam-Bob Davis Podcast 835.

Storm Chaser

Meteorologist and Professional Storm Chaser Brian Saastamoinen joins the podcast from Midwest Intercept Now. For their Facebook page click here.

2019 Will Be More Active

Especially relevant is we all love a good storm. This year looks to be more active than past year’s in our neck of the woods. Brian will be chasing in southern Iowa and northern Missouri this weekend. For most people interested in this sort of thing, it all started with a childhood experience with a summer storm.

What Causes The Big Storms?

What are these big storms due to? How do they get started? What contributions are storm chasers making to safety and learning more about these dangerous weather systems?

Storm Chasing Traffic Jams In Oklahoma

Moreover with storm chasing becoming so popular, how do the professionals deal with literal traffic jams on roads during particularly dangerous tornadoes?

Your Money Shot May Kill You

Certainly with the advancement of technology everyone wants to get a money shot of a tornado. People don’t even realize they are risking their lives to take video on their phones. Saastamoinen chases with a full team of first responders and meteorologists. Even more, they always have escape routes and emphasize safety first.

Back Roads Are Packed

In addition in some places homes don’t have basements, so when local TV advises people to ‘take shelter’ they jump in their car to go to someone else’s house. As amazing as that sounds, it also puts lots of cars on back roads, trying to get away from the storm. At the same time chasers, professional and amateur are out there.

Safety First

Finally, it may seem unnecessary but I also asked Brian to review safety procedures. Take a look at this video striking Saint Louis airport and you’ll see why.

Bonnie-Clyde-1930s-America-Bob Davis Podcast 830

Nothing Sweeter Than The 1930’s

If you study history you know we all have our favorite periods. These days I turn more and more to 1930’s America. Specifically the story of Bonnie and Clyde. Learn more in Bonnie-Clyde-1930s-America-Bob Davis Podcast 830.

Highwaymen

There’s a new movie on Netflix called ‘Highwaymen‘. The movie details the search for Bonnie and Clyde and their inevitable end and stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson. I like this movie because it does a better job telling more of the real story, than other efforts.

The Ford V8

Especially relevant to the story is the automobile and the then new national highway system. For Clyde Barrow there was no equal to the then brand new Ford V-8. This was Barrow’s number one choice to steal. Bonnie Parker died with a map of the old national highway system on her lap.

National Highway System

Most noteworthy Barrow was famous for covering as much as a thousand miles in one day in one of his stolen Ford V-8’s. The duo sped across New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota and Kansas on those brand new blacktopped two lane interstate highways, and many a dirt road or field during their crime sprees.

Depression and Crime

The height of the depression in the early 1930’s comes down to us in faded black and white photos, and speed graphic newspaper photos taken in tourist camps, abandoned farms and failed banks. Yet the people then, experienced it in color. Find out why this era fascinates me in Bonnie-Clyde-1930s-America-Bob Davis Podcast 830.

Criminal Minds

Finally there is this question of criminal behavior. Bonnie and Clyde have a special place in 1930’s history. To a certain degree their story line is a lie. Foolish young people pushed into a life of crime by life circumstances? Or criminals that terrorized local communities across the rural Midwest?

Mystery and Legend

In conclusion Highwaymen, three books I read before for a podcast I did about the mystery and legend of Texas Ranger Frank Hamer. Those links are here. I did these podcasts because so many inaccuracies and lies have become part of Bonnie and Clyde lore.

Gen Z-Millennials-Brave New World-Bob Davis Podcast 798

Recent polls show solid support for socialism by Generation Z and Millennial Americans. Especially relevant is whether today’s ‘conservatives’ have the arguments against socialism. Find out in Gen Z-Millennials-Brave New World-Bob Davis Podcast 798. (Editor’s Note: The title of this podcast was Gen Z-Millennials-Prefer Socialism-Bob Davis Podcast 798 but had to be changed to meet FaceBook’s nonsensical, arbitrary and otherwise byzantine standards for commentary and journalism they think is a political ad. Speaking of a Brave New World!)

Strong Support For New Ideas

First of All, young Americans support for single payer health insurance. They like the idea of free college. Moreover there’s also support for federal job guarantees.

Voting Democrat

Also younger adults voted for democrats 2018 which helped hand President Trump a stinging defeat.

Shock

In contrast Older Americans are shocked. Why? Learn more in Gen Z-Millennials-Brave New World-Bob Davis Podcast 798.

Socialist Definitions

First of all, start with defining socialism.

Is There An Argument In The House?

Consequently, if you’re against socialism, what are the arguments in favor of capitalism?

Party Of Thinkers Has Become The Party of Red Faced Sputtering

Conservatives used to say they were the ‘thinkers’. Certainly democrats were ’emotional’ and had ‘no plan’. These days it seems like the shoe’s on the other foot.

A Plan Beats No Plan

Even more, democrats seem to have an awful lot of ideas backed up by academics. Policy details about new ideas like the Modern Monetary Theory and Universal Basic Income, or Open Borders, are part of their plan for the future. What’s the republican plan?

GOP Failing

Republicans have failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The GOP has increased spending and increased the deficit after complaining about deficits during the Obama years.

Republicans who were furious at President Obama’s “I have a pen and a phone” taunt applaud President Trump for using executive power to govern. And republicans are only too happy to support this kind of executive overreach.

Lack Of Principles

As a result one wonders whether republicans anywhere have arguments against socialism beyond pointing to Venezuela’s crisis and name calling. This will not do in 2020. You can’t grow a party without principles.

Laying Down And Letting Someone Else Make The Arguments

In conclusion I have often said there’s too much advocacy media. Republicans are only too willing to lay down while someone else grandstands or calls names, plays tricks and makes their arguments for them. Sadly, republicans are obsessed with ‘messaging’ while their children and grandchildren are socialists.
