Rare Interview

Most importantly The Bob Davis Podcasts is not about interviews.

A Great Story And The Personality To Tell It

But every now and then I encounter someone with a story and the personality to tell it.

Eastern Sierra Story From A Master Trekker’s Perspective

Firstly I met Dave in the Eastern Sierras at a desert campsite.

Secondly once Dave and I started talking I grabbed my recorder.

A Life In These Mountains

Certainly spending most of your life in these mountains is worth a conversation.

Pacific Crest and John Muir

Even more hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and the John Muir more than once should cause any trekker to sit up and take notice.

More Than Trekking

However we talk about more than hiking or trekking.

Car Culture

For example Dave feels strongly about today’s ‘car culture’ and puts himself to the test by going nomad, without a car. Learn more in Master-Trekker-Dave Kiel-Bob Davis Podcast 1001.

Great Western Loop With No Car

That is to say Dave “Glider” Kiel is in the process of a great western loop trek using public transportation, the kindness of friends and his thumb.

Today’s Selfie Culture

In addition we talk about today’s trekkers and their quest make the fastest time hiking trails or grab a selfie and go home.

Getting Into Nature and Learning Skills

On the other hand Dave says, people want to get into nature. They want to see the sights and learn outdoor skills.

Decades On The Trail

In the same vein this is a person who possesses skills honed from decades on the trails and in the Sierras.

The Story

How he got where he is is a big part of the story.

Certainly Dave owns a vehicle. A very nice ‘little custom built camper’.

However he’s going car free on this thousands of mile trek to make a point.

Attached To The Desert

To sum up I love the west. Especially the desert. And these mountains are incredible.

Wide Range Of Experiences

Finally I certainly realize there’s a wide range of experiences you can have out here.

Learning

Learning something from someone who’s been part of this landscape for at least fifty years is one of them.

(Editor’s Note: In This podcast I refer to Dave as Dave GILDER Kiel. His nickname is in fact GLIDER. Sorry about that Dave! To find out how he got his name visit his blog by following the links above.)

Depth Of Nomad Experience

Above all time to reflect on the depth of this nomad experience in Quartzsite-Arizona-Mojave-California-Bob Davis Podcast 997.

Personal and Real

Firstly I’ve focused on keeping these podcasts personal and real.

Experience

Secondly it’s all about my nomad journey and experience.

Quartzsite

Certainly there’s something special about the moon like Bureau Of Land Management site at Quartzsite.

Nomadland

Maybe that’s why it was the setting for the Oscar winning movie Nomadland.

Special To Me

In addition it’s special to me.

Find out why in Quartzsite-Arizona-Mojave-California-Bob Davis Podcast 997.

Began My Journey Here

In short I had only felt I had begun my journey back in January, here in Quartzsite.

Relaunch

Therefore being back here adds emphasis to the idea of relaunching these travel nomad podcasts.

California

Moreover moving on to California from the Western edge of Arizona feels great.

Renewed Sense of Freedom And Wonder

That is to say my sense of freedom and wonder is renewed.

Mojave National Preserve

Most importantly this podcast is live from Quartzsite and from a beautiful site up in the Mojave National Preserve.

New Discoveries

In the same vein how I got here and new discoveries are always on the docket.

However these aren’t really travelogue podcasts.

A Deeper Sense of Thinking

For instance one of my goals is to give listeners and subscribers a sense of how a nomad’s thinking changes over time.

Sense of Time

To clarify something happens with our sense of time when we travel.

New Schedules

Likewise as a lifelong night owl I have been surprised by my early to bed, early to rise travel schedule.

Creature Comforts

And creature comforts on the road are so simple they’re a surprise to find.

Review and Reflection

So as this whole project starts anew it’s time for review and reflection.

Mojave

To sum up no better place for that than up in the Providence Mountains of California.

Euphoria To Frustration

Finally life as a nomad can euphoric one minute and frustrating in the next.

Likewise in normal life.

New-Mexico-American-Tibet-Bob Davis Podcast 995

Is New Mexico The American Tibet?

Above all the states I’ve visited New Mexico feels like the American Tibet. Details in New-Mexico-American-Tibet-Bob Davis Podcast 995.

Not Really Tibet But…

Firstly I am not suggesting at all that a US State would actually BE Tibet.

Lots Of Travel

However I’ve traveled a lot.

Secondly I never spent too much time in The Land Of Enchantment.

The Land of Enchantment For Sure

Certainly now I have begun to understand why New Mexico owns that motto.

Mountains

For example the Manzano mountains. Not the first thing you’d think of when you consider New Mexico.

Sunsets

On the other hand driving through these mountains and sunset was a mind blowing experience,

History

In addition maybe it’s the history in the state going way back.

Unique Experiences

But if the middle part of the state isn’t your thing there are other unique experiences waiting.

Albuquerque

I mention it but then, there’s Breaking Bad. So…

Roswell and Taos

Of course Las Cruces, Roswell, Santa Fe, and Taos.

Heading North and West

To clarify I took 285 North out of Roswell. connected up with 60 West, then to 41 North.

Hey Wait! This Is Like…American Tibet!

After riding along these US and State Highways I started to come to the conclusion New Mexico has a sort of Tibet like quality.

Vistas

For instance wind swept vistas at any time of the day. And the most mysterious of all, White Sands.

National Forests

During this part of the trip I ended up in national forest campgrounds in the Cibola, all the way up to the northern part of the state in the Carson National Forest. Not to mention some of the best Bureau Of Land Management sites I’ve seen anywhere.

Amazing.

Travel’s Real Value

Finally I’ve certainly talked about the value of travel.

Wander Without A Schedule

And yes, sometimes it feels spiritual. Especially when you can wander without a schedule.

In the same vein it’s the wandering.

Forget The Gotta Haves Just Go

Moreover the wandering without worrying about getting somewhere or the ‘gotta haves’ in life.

Happy Accidents

In conclusion sometimes those happy accidents make all the difference in the world.

To sum up I have never been to Tibet.

Meditation

However the wind, mountains, sunsets and the solitary nature of my own personal travel plans brought the Land of Enchantment up a notch in my mind.

Vast Distances and Views

Most importantly remember New Mexico travelers are dealing with vast distances. In addition a long history.

Overall a very different experience.
