Unhappy #Vanlifers Doing It Wrong

Are unhappy #Vanlifers really doing it wrong? A recent Wall Street Journal post about the hash tag Van Life again points out the obvious. Details in Unhappy-#Vanlifers-Doing-It-Wrong-Bob Davis Podcast 1133.

Nomad Coverage

Firstly I have rarely seen positive coverage of the nomad experience.

Hard Life

Secondly the recent Wall Street Journal piece reports on a few #vanlife people complain about how hard the life is.

Instagram

And say Instagram has it all wrong.

As a result I’ll ask again whether anyone actually believes anything they see on social media?

Best Foot

Of course we put our best foot forward.

Or show our best face to the world.

In other words analogous to cleaning your house before guests arrive.

But there’s more.

Negative Experience

Because the article in question illustrates a number of negative experiences for the vanlifers interviewed.

For example, no place to sleep.

And not being able to take showers.

Or being lonely because the dating life out here sucks.

Finally the unexpected costs of mechanical problems and fuel.

As I have said many times in many different podcasts…

Not A Bowl Of Cherries

In general life is not always a bowl of cherries.

Overcome

In fact part of the experience in #nomadlife is overcoming setbacks and solving problems.

Won’t Quit

To sum up the article on a positive note all of the van life people interviewed said they won’t quit.

Great Potential

All in all I believe there’s great potential in nomad life.

And as I have noted as the infrastructure for digital nomads gets better…

In time more may choose this lifestyle.

Establishment Media Hates Nomads

However I don’t think the establishment back home or the establishment media will give our lifestyle a break.

Presently reporters and editors seem to love the idea that social media is ‘lying’ about living on the road.

Don’t Dream

In essence don’t dream of a different life.

It’s too dangerous.

Stay Back In The World

Meanwhile keep paying ridiculous amount of rent and commuting four hours a day.

By and large living in huge expensive cities and stepping over homeless people to get to the subway.

Of course doing a digital job and being required to work in an office…

When even in the present time you can work from anywhere.

Just In Case

Just in case you’re thinking about buying a van and dumping your absurdly expensive efficiency in said large city…

Take a look at these poor idiots in this Wall Street Journal story without delay.

After that you’ll accept your life as it is.

Reality

In reality over time nomad life can be easy and satisfying.

Lots To Learn

Of course there is a lot to learn.

Yes You Can

But if you can do it and you want to try.

Go for it.

Vanlife-Nomad-Backlash-Bob Davis Podcast 980

VanLife Nomad Backlash

Suddenly there’s a Vanlife Nomad Backlash. Certainly it’s fun to be free and living out on the road. What’s the problem? My reaction in Vanlife-Nomad-Backlash-Bob Davis Podcast 980.

Full Commitment

Firstly I’ve just recently made a full commitment to living on the road. Learn more about that here.

Extended Travel

Secondly extended travel has been a part of these podcasts since the beginning.

Social Media…Again

However recently some have taken issue with some over the top social media accounts.

Hollywood Has Discovered The Modern Nomad

To clarify reporters and Hollywood have suddenly discovered the nomad trend.

Blame It On Instagram

As a result it seems like detractors want to attack the whole lifestyle as ‘fake’ because of a few over the top Instagram accounts.

Not For Everyone

Meanwhile my experience has been it’s not a lifestyle for everyone.

Demanding And Tough

In fact the nomad lifestyle can be demanding and tough but be very rewarding at the same time.

Nomad Life Is Hardscrabble

In the same vein I haven’t met too many nomads driving around in vehicles costing at least six figures.

The Majesty Of A Walmart Parking Lot

For example a nomad might experience the majesty of a campground in a national forest one week. And the majesty of a Walmart or Truck Stop lot the next.

Adventure and Fun

To sum up it’s not always glamorous. But it’s always an adventure.

Back Out On The Back Road

Most importantly while I am stuck in a driveway in Virginia as we deal with a death in the family I can’t wait to get back on the back road.

Real Experience

In Vanlife-Nomad-Backlash-Bob Davis Podcast 980 it’s time to talk about the real experiences I have had as a newly minted ‘nomad’. And most importantly the depth of those experiences.

Family and Friends

Even more I realize many nomads are interrupting trips with long stays with family and friends. Why? Because we can.

So What?

On the other hand. Who can blame us?

Shore Power and A Hot Shower

After months of taking showers in truck stops and cooking over campfires, shore power and a hot shower at ‘home’ are pure luxury.

All About The Vibe

Most importantly is the reality of a true positive vibe that comes from travel in any form.

Doesn’t Matter What Rig You Have

Whether you’re rig is a broken down conversion or a Prevost, you’ve experienced that vibe.

No Commitments

Finally, think about travel without commitments. And going where you want. Just plain fun.

Many People Hitting The Road

In conclusion it’s true there are many people hitting the road for various reasons. As a result the nomad lifestyle and Vanlife have become a trend.

Tear Down Something Just Because Lots Of People Are Doing It

Why is it necessary to attack and tear something down just because a lot of people are doing it?

Truck-Stop-Nomad-Radio-Bob Davis Podcast 972

Truck Stop Nomad Radio

Most importantly welcome to Truck Stop Nomad Radio! Spending a lot of time in truck stops these days. Getting some good shots of the ruins of twentieth century America out here in the South West. Learn more in Truck-Stop-Nomad-Radio-Bob Davis Podcast 972.

Suggestions and Support For Nomad Life

Certainly I get a lot of suggestions. And I welcome the support and interest in this nomad life effort.

Recent Suggestions

Firstly, one of recent suggestion was, get a camera in the truck. Just turn it on and record. That would be my ‘video’ channel. I appreciate the fact that people want to help and participate.

Secondly it just doesn’t work that way for me.

Nomad Life Is An Internal Process

For instance my experience is this is very much an internal process. I never knew how much noise my brain made until I decided to hit the road. Alone.

True Freedom

Even more once you give away everything you own and release the connection to place the potential to experience true freedom is there.

Your Mind Makes Noise

However the mind resists. Makes noise. Produces various reactions.

New Understanding

But until I hit the road permanently I never really fully understood.

Intensely Personal Experiences

In the same vein these are intensely personal experiences.

Personal Memories Too

As a result the memories are also personal. Although I work in the audio medium it’s very difficult to relate those internal processes, let alone produce videos about it.

A Challenging Time

Finally we’re living through a challenging time. I don’t feel it as much because I am mobile. But it’s there.

Planetary Conjunction

Above all on a date which marks the ending of the darkness and the beginning of the light, and a planetary conjunction to boot, I have some observations about that too!

Sights Smells Feelings

To sum up nomad life for me has been a jumbled collection of visual memories. Sights. Smells. Feelings.

Covering A Lot Of Ground

From Minnesota all the way through the middle of the country and deep south, to the deserts of the American Southwest.

Only Just Started

In short like life itself I’ve covered a lot of ground but it feels like I’ve only just started.
