Trump Blew It In 2018

Especially relevant is the fact that less than a month ago the so called conservative base was furious at the president and the republican party for taking a ‘shellacking’ in the midterm elections.

It Is Trump’s Fault

Furthermore I did several podcasts on the midterms explaining polling showed the GOP did not have to lose congress.

Raise The Stakes To Win

Therefore it is most noteworthy that the president opened the new year by raising the stakes. First a government shut down. Then threats to declare an national emergency.

What’s the issue?

A campaign promise by Donald Trump to solve what he has described as a crisis on the border.

Consequently, the solution he hit upon? ‘Build A Wall‘.

First of all. the president failed to get a republican congress to fund a wall. Now he has redoubled his efforts to get a democrat house to fund the wall, which they say they won’t. Enter the shut down. Enter the specter of a ‘National Emergency‘.

Outrage Controversy and Emotional Outpouring

If outrage and controversy over the shut down wasn’t enough, Trump is raising the stakes with threats to declare a national emergency. Under an emergency the military can build what is now described as a steel barrier by the president. Or at least he thinks so. Is he right? After a late evening sushi happy hour, I came to my studio to tell the truth about this whole episode. It’s not about the shut down or even a national emergency. Trump is doing what Roy Cohn taught him to do many years ago. Make threats. Throw tantrums. Demand. Raise the stakes until the other guy gives you what he wants. Above all force the opposition to talk about what you want to talk about. Control the media battle space. Use the ‘bully pulpit‘.

In conclusion, Trump does this again and again. And everyone takes the bait, hook line and sinker.

First of all, the Minnesota Legislature is as confusing as it is frustrating. Getting a straight answer from politicians is never easy. Straight talk from a Minnesota Legislator is truly a rare thing.

Especially relevant is the swamp you’ll wade through when you talk to Minnesota Republicans. They are foggy on the ideas behind terms like freedom, smaller government and conservatism. According to one of the new caucus members, republican leadership isn’t for freedom and smaller government at all. So much for principles.

Since The New Republican House Caucus hails from rural districts, news reports suggest this is a rural thing. It almost goes without saying that farm country is more ‘republican’ than the cities. Drazkowski says it’s the cities that aren’t ‘conservative’ enough.

Finally what about republican’s loss of the Minnesota house and all statewide races? Is it because the suburbs around Minneapolis and Saint Paul did not support Trump? Furthermore Daudt and other leaders supported non endorsed candidates? Did they weaken the grassroots?

Saint Paul Shenanigans Lead To Tame Revolt.

Shenanigans in Saint Paul are legendary. We’ve all heard the rumors about pecking order orientations. We know staffers appointed by leadership tattle on members. Leaders bullying members on votes. Above all rumors of bullying more ‘conservative’ members are normal.

In conclusion Representative Drazkowski says in this podcast that the special interests are only in it for themselves. Due to this reality money and power have a chokehold on politics in this state. Consequently, it ought to be chilling to republicans.

Working America Into A Froth

It’s especially relevant how the media and politicians managed to work most of America into a froth for this election. Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives. Republicans did better than predicted in the Senate. The GOP also managed to surprise in a couple of governor’s races.

How Predictions Stack Up To Results

It’s Most noteworthy how results stacked up to the predictions. I see it this way. Democrats managed to cobble together a few pick ups in house races here and there into a majority. Republicans could have prevented some of these losses. What happened? How could the GOP manage to increase it’s majority in the senate but lose it in the house?

Minnesota Republicans Got The 8th District As Consolation Prize

Moreover for my Minnesota subscribers and listeners, there were major losses for incumbent republicans in the 2nd and 3rd House districts, all the statewide races and the state legislature. The consolation was one of the few republican pick ups in the House is Minnesota’s 8th district.

Blue Wave?

Was it a blue wave? My analysis says no. Democrats won some hard fought victories in key house races to control the house but they failed to win key governor’s races and lost ground in the Senate. More details in Real Time 2018 Election Results-Live-Bob Davis Podcast 774.

Some Outcomes Still Out

I am still waiting on the outcome of key races. Just learning the Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has lost his bid for a third term, and waiting for some House races, Senate bids in Arizona and Montana. In coming days there will be plenty of post analysis, celebration and blame to go around.

Hard Drives Humming and Pizza

In conclusion there’s still something about a quiet night at the Broadcast Bunker. Results came from the Internet. The hum of hard drives and processors kept me company.

(Editor’s Note: A late development Monday in Minnesota. Republicans can add another pick up with Jim Hagedorn’s victory in Southern Minnesota’s 1st District. Minnesota republicans managed to lose all the statewide races and the state House of Representatives, making victories in the 8th and 1st even more bittersweet.)
