Maine-Extreme-North-Down-East-Bob Davis Podcast 1009

Maine Extreme North Down East

Most importantly I am in Maine’s Extreme North heading all the way Down East and you can learn more about the trip in Maine-Extreme-North-Down-East-Bob Davis Podcast 1009.

It Was A Quick Tour Of The Northeast

Firstly I am taking what started out as a quick tour of the Northeast US.

Wanting To Spend More Time

Secondly I am finding myself wanting to spend more time here.

Three States

Above all there were three states I had ever been to despite all my travels.

Vermont. New Hampshire. Maine.

Southern New Hampshire Still To Come

To clarify haven’t spent much time in New Hampshire because I went through quickly on my way to Maine.

Days in Vermont and Maine

On the other hand I spent three days in Vermont and now an equal amount of time in Maine.

Massachusetts!

Of course I’ll be heading back through southern New Hampshire on the way Massachusetts.

Wild and Wonderful

Consequently while Vermont feels like a warm blanket Maine feels wild and wonderful.

Down East

I would think that certainly most people are most familiar with ‘Down East’.

Maine’s South Eastern Shore

Even more if they’re from the East Coast they’ve probably spent time on Maine’s South Eastern shores,

Origin Of Down East

However the origin of the term ‘Down East’ is a sailing term and only refers to geography secondarily.

Corrections Are In Order

Therefore I have to correct my own definition of the term in Maine-Extreme-North-Down-East-Bob Davis Podcast 1009.

Partial To Northern Maine

Finally I find myself partial to Northern Maine, up by the Canadian Border.

Moreover I am not sure why.

Maybe because every place I saw around the bend looked like a scene from a Stephen King novel.

Maine’s State Parks

Certainly Maine’s state parks are great.

Remote Regions

And Northern Maine features some of the most remote regions in the United States let alone the East Coast.

Extremes

Likewise it is hard to imagine a place more remote and extreme considering I am within driving distance of some of the most densely populated cities in the country.

History? We Got Your History!

Finally if it is history you’re looking for Maine has it in spades.

French Explorers and Extreme Weather

Native Americans, French Explorers, Colonial Wars, Early Settlements and Extreme Weather.

Down East Is Civilization

To sum up once you get ‘Down East’ you’ll see more of the colonial era villages Vermont is famous for.

Harbors and Ferries

Even more the harbors and ferries.

Acadia!

And don’t forget Acadia National Park which I did!

Leaving Something For The Next Visit

In conclusion it’s always good to leave some things undone on any tour through a state like Maine.

Because I’ll be back.

Pace Of Travel

In addition it’s always good to spend a little time in these podcasts talking about the pace of travel and the internal processes of a nomad.

Late-Summer-Michigan-Road-Trip-Bob Davis Podcast 947

Great Summer Road Trip To Michigan

These days taking a long road trip is pretty much out of the question. But a short road trip from Minnesota to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and West Coast is perfect. Learn more in Late-Summer-Michigan-Road-Trip-Bob Davis Podcast 947.

You’ve Never Been?

First of all when I told friends I was headed to the Midwest’s ‘West Coast’ people said, “You’ve never been?”

Second as a Chicagoan I’d been to Benton Harbor and the Indiana Dunes, right?

The West Coast

However not on up Michigan’s West Coast.

The Upper Peninsula

I’d certainly been to the Upper Peninsula. But I haven’t spent much time there.

Wow

I’ll just say it. Wow.

I Want To Go Back…In The Winter!

More importantly, I think it is one of the best places to visit in the summer. So much so, I want to go back in the winter!

Not Big On Travelog Podcasts

Above all I am not one for travelog podcasts. Every bend in the highway is chronicled. Routes and places to stay talked about and so on.

The Routes

I can tell you about Wisconsin 77 connecting to Ashland County GG, and ultimately 77 all the way to Ironwood, Michigan.

Some Of The Campgrounds

Even more the Alpine Campground near Ironwood, or US 20 to US 41all the way to Marquette, Michigan. Then all the way across to Michigan 123 on down to the magnificent Mackinac Bridge.

But It’s The History That Gets Me

Then most importantly the great maritime towns along Michigan’s Lake Michigan coast from Petoskey to Charlavoix on down to Traverse City, Manistee and all the way to Ludington.

The SS Badger Is The Cherry On Top

Finally  the cherry on top for me was the four hour ferry ride on the SS Badger the only steam powered boat on the lake these days, and the last remaining rail ferry.

The Old Industrial Midwest

I am product of the old industrial Midwest.

Factories, Farms, Railroads, Mines and Lakes

My home is a heartland of factories and mines. I can’t forget the farms and train yards.

Won’t Forget Working Class History

I won’t forget the working class history here.

Still An Industrial Powerhouse

Likewise I have to point out this area remains one of the world’s most powerful industrial regions.

Travel Is All About Learning

To sum up what gets me about this kind of travel is the history.

Plenty of that in this podcast.

Hurricane-Hysteria-Creating-American-Dreamworld-Bob Davis Podcast 860

Real Damage In The Bahamas. A Dreamworld In The US

First of all this podcast is about media coverage. Hurricane Dorian did major damage in the Bahamas. After nearly two weeks of fear from media Dorian had little effect in the US. Learn more in Hurricane-Hysteria-Creating-American-Dreamworld-Bob Davis Podcast 860.

Speculation and Predictions

These days the mission of my podcast is to avoid predicting the future.

Outcomes Matter

Furthermore outcomes matter. Hurricane Dorian exposed how our media lies.

Shoddy Reporting

Moreover hurricane coverage exposed how they cover every story. Shoddy reporting. Predictions by so called experts. Breathless gossip. Dramatic scenes. No facts. Little perspective or context.

Stating The Obvious

In addition, seems like I’m stating the obvious. In Hurricane-Hysteria-Creating-American-Dreamworld-Bob Davis Podcast 860 I’ll tell you why it’s this way.

Public Nuisance

It’s especially relevant to say news coverage has become a public nuisance. Just ask those who evacuated only to learn it was a waste of their time and public resources.

Sharpie President

Moreover why is the President being attacked for his predictions of the storm’s path? Didn’t the media do exactly that for more than a week? Sharpie’s indeed.

Gossip

Seems like major media companies can’t afford real reporters. Also, no one trusts them. No one will talk to them. Certainly this is why they have nothing real to report.

US Achilles Heel

Finally I wonder what happens when there’s a real crisis. Consequently we must admit our advanced communications capability might turn out to be our Achilles Heel. Welcome to the American Dreamworld in this Walk and Talk Podcast.
