Loneliest American Highway

Firstly US Route 50 is unofficially called the Loneliest American Highway. Join me for the trip in Loneliest-American-Highway-US-50-Bob Davis Podcast 1161.

Best American Highway

But Route 50 turns out to be one of the best road trips you can take.

Mega Road Trip California

With this in mind as I ended my mega road trip up the California coast…

Sacramento To The East Coast

I headed for Sacramento as soon as I wrapped up on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Here’s The California Road Trip Podcasts

US 50 Is Different

However US Route 50 is something altogether different.

Mountains To Deserts

That is to say we start in the mountains and deserts of Eastern California.

Free Camping

In particular in these mountains I encountered my first ‘free’ campsite.

In contrast with the bracing breezes on the West Coast my first campground was a thriving babbling brook.

Most importantly I arrived too early in the year for the campground to be open.

But the gate was down and other people were camping.

Therefore I spent a great first night at the side of the brook.

Subsequently on into the California and Nevada deserts.

Nothing Like A Two Lane Highway For Freedom

Above all I can say there is little more in this life more therapeutic than a deserted two lane highway stretching into infinity.

Open Road

In other words if what you seek is the open road US 50 has it in spades.

Mountains To Valleys

Equally important are the shifts from mountains to valleys and deserts as we travel this route.

Life Pressure

Certainly these days we all wonder what will happen next.

Corporate Grind

Even more the pressures of day to day life and corporate life are heavy for many.

Small Town Antidote

I took a closer look at many small towns along the way with this purpose in mind

What Comes Next

In other words if you didn’t do what you’re doing now how would you do whatever comes next

Small Town Life

As an illustration of that question small towns like Ely, Nevada and Delta Colorado help the traveler imagine what life would be like if things were a little different.

Colorado Mountains and Continental Divide

Finally moving into the Colorado Mountains including crossing the Continental Divide at Mammoth Mountain.

Plains

Then we moved straightaway into the plains of Eastern Colorado and Western Kansas.

National Parks and Truck Stop Camping

From time to time camping at more free campgrounds, national parks like The Great Basin and Black Canyon, and an occasional Truck Stop.

Meditating On History

In addition to the meditation of driving there’s a lot of history in this region of the country.

Farming Ranching Mining

Especially ending in Fort Dodge Kansas, I am reminded of the ranching history of the plains as well as the mining, pioneer and Native American history of Colorado, Nevada and California.

Ancient People

To this end there are artifacts like the Petroglyphs in Nevada where people lived and thrived more than ten thousand years ago.

Full Experience

To sum up all of this is waiting to be experienced on supposedly the loneliest highway in the United States.

But I think Route 50 is one of the best highways.

Gurus

Certainly if you want advice there’s no shortage of gurus on YouTube.

What About The Experience

However if you want to know what the experience of nomad life is about there’s not much on that.

It’s Complicated

Above all it may just be such a complicated subject no one wants to tackle it.

Your Experience May Vary

On the other hand the nomad experience depends on the individual.

Hard To Pin It Down

For that reason it’s difficult to pin down what the experience is all about.

Yeah But What About The Experience

In fact another nomad made that specific point the other day.

Nomadland-Goes-Hollywood-Chic-Bob Davis Podcast 1037

Therefore I decided to do this podcast.

Out Of One…Many

Most importantly there’s as many different experiences as there are nomads.

Lots Of Tribes

For example there’s weekend warriors, people in their cars, hippies in buses and Van Life people.

Not Like The Movie

And even more people with varying degrees of resources with almost any kind of rig you can imagine. But it’s not all like the movie.

Something’s Going On

Moreover there’s something going on.

Back In The World

That is to say there’s something going to back in the world, as I like to say.

Fear

Maybe it’s because of fear.

Life Is Not Guaranteed Anymore

And the feeling suddenly that life is not the guarantee it once was.

Damn The Torpedoes

I think many have decided damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

Passion

During that process they pull a switch that ignited a passion to live.

Life and Experience

After that a desire to experience.

It’s not for everyone.

Now A Thing

However this is becoming a thing.

Dirt Under The Fingernails is Chic?

Even more, two words that come to mind are chic and Hollywood.

Please Don’t Call It A Movement

Finally I hope this doesn’t become a ‘movement’.

With leaders and followers.

Certainly I have been talking about that off and on for several podcasts.

Nomad Conversation

Because the subject comes up in normal nomad conversation out here.

Individuals

Meanwhile it is an individual experience.

No right way to do it.

Testing One, Two, Three

Therefore I’ll try again to see if I can define the experience.

Back Roads Forever

Second of all there’s travel always on the back roads. I’ve certainly done my fair share of it. Even more travel in a Twenty year old ambulance with very few comforts of home.

Hit The Road

That is to say I decided to get rid of everything I own and hit the road. Forever.

Few Comforts

Above all that means hitting the road with a camp stove, hammock and a few other ‘comforts’.

Crazy? I’ve Been Tested!

Certainly people think I am crazy. Where do you get your mail? What do you do when you want to sleep in a bed? How can you function without a toilet and a shower?

New Comforts

Well. I have a toilet. I have a Jet Boil. A camp stove. An awesome new sleeping bag from REI. Stuff like that.

First Podcast Of The Rest of The Podcasts

Because this is the first podcast of the rest of the podcasts, the rest of your questions will be answered going forward.

Time To Take Action

Most importantly I made this decision because it is time to take action. Learn why I am doing this in Full-Gonzo-Nomad-Bob Davis Podcast 959.

Meeting The Future Together

Finally I plan to maintain my business networking contacts in Minneapolis and Saint Paul and the Upper Midwest. On the other hand there is so much more on the back roads. We’ll meet the future together.

Leap Into The Unknown

In conclusion this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. A huge leap into the unknown.

Feels Wonderful

In the same vein getting rid of everything but essentials and driving away from an empty house feels wonderful.

Might try it sometime!
