Podcast 467 – Rick Barry

Rick Barry. One of the all time NBA greats joins the Bob Davis Podcasts live from South Carolina. It may be a bit of a departure for me to talk about sports, but really it’s Rick talking about sports, and so much more. For some the campaign trail is endlessly exciting, but when you see the same thing over and over again in produced events and stump speeches, a departure helps with campaign fatigue. Rick Barry also helps transition the podcasts into the travel/adventure part of this trip, as we prepare to head down to the Florida Keys. Barry’s emphasis on preparation and the basics of the game helped him become a Hall of Fame basketball star, playing in the ABA and the NBA. His experience informs his positions on the game and the league today as well as a good portion of this podcast spent on politics. Rick is a no nonsense guy when it comes to his experience and knowledge of the game. His opinions about talk radio are particularly enlightening, when considering callers as well as hosts. Then onto some trivia. Why did Barry shoot an underhanded free throw? Why did Wilt Chamberlain stop shooting this way? How did Rick learn to shoot this way? He talks about his father, a semi pro player and coach, and his values. I think this is a great lesson for anyone trying attempting to fulfill their God given talents in almost anyway. I learned a lot talking to Rick Barry, and we come from completely different worlds. The first thing I said to him was, “I hope you aren’t offended, I don’t know anything about sports.” I don’t think he was too impressed (LOL). Barry is known as one of the most opinion players in the NBA and he doesn’t disappoint in this podcast. ‘t any case it is a great sit with a legend who shares my passion concerning Hydrus. A Jeb Bush Event. Live from Sumter, South Carolina The Bob Davis Podcasts joins the Bush campaign for a Jeb Bush Event featuring Senator Lindsay Graham and Governor Bush. Originally planned for a local diner, the campaign had to move the event to the University of South Carolina, which was a shame since the potato soup at Baker’s Sweets in Sumter is amazing. Another feature of this podcast is to set the record straight regarding Jason Lewis’ appearance in Bob Davis Podcast 404, in which he stated he generally supported the President’s Iran deal with caveats. Lewis’ campaign for Congress in Minnesota’s Second District is apparently scaring his opponents so much, they’re excerpting liner notes about his foreign policy views, rather than actually listening to what he said in the podcast. There will be a new editorial note on podcast 404 which everyone can read, clarifying what Jason said. What is amazing about the current controversy surrounding Jason’s view that the country cannot have limited government at home and big government abroad is that when you’re on the campaign trail you hear republican candidates walking right up to the line advocating another war, and apparently Republicans love it. Maybe the 2nd District’s Republican candidate for congress is correct to question this impulse among all the GOP candidates? (You’ll hear it in this podcast too.) How can talk show hosts and commentators compare the current crop of bellicose campaigners with Ronald Reagan who negotiated, and kept the United States out of major military commitments and war for 8 years. Thus, a local congressional district issue dovetails beautifully with what a candidate says on the hustings in South Carolina. In any case, the Reagan era is over and is not coming back. The challenges of our current time are multi-polar, not bi-polar. Even the economic challenges are different. All these challenges will require new and different solutions that can only come from people who are able to consider opinions that might be unorthodox. Inside An Iowa Caucus. Live from Tennessee, we take a final look at the Iowa Caucuses, by taking subscribers inside a rural Iowa precinct caucus. Thirteen US States and 2 US territories use the caucus system. People who live in states with primary elections – where people cast a single vote on a ballot of some kind on primary election day – may hear the word ‘caucus’ but have never been inside one and don’t really understand the process. As democrats argue about how Hillary Clinton eked out a victory in the Iowa caucus, and Donald Trump making noises about Ted Cruz’ efforts to win, just how a caucus is conducted is news. In this podcast we take you inside an Iowa Caucus; The Rules, The Speeches, The Vote Counting and The Results. If you’re lucky enough to live in a state with caucuses, when you participate you’re taking part in one of the oldest democratic processes in the world. Classic representative government in Athens, Rome, and the Venetian Republic among others, allowed a sort of people’s congress. All citizens in good standing could participate in choosing candidate for leadership positions. We still do it to this day with caucuses. It’s fascinating to participate, or listen to everyday citizens conducting an orderly meeting in which leaders are nominated, voted upon, and citizens from that precinct are chosen to represent their neighbors at the next level meeting. While these podcasts have questioned Iowa’s permanent position as the first in the nation vote in presidential cycles, the commitment of its citizens to the process should be celebrated. Having escaped the snows of Des Moines and decamped to Chattanooga Tennessee, I am joined in this podcast by an old friend, who also provides some insight as to how one of the key states in the so called ‘Southeastern Conference’ may vote on Super Tuesday. From here, its on to South Carolina, where all the campaigns are headed after New Hampshire. This concludes the Iowa Caucus portion of 2016 coverage for the Bob Davis Podcasts.
