Congressman-Tom-Emmer-Part1-Bob Davis Podcast 873

Once Upon A Time…

Once upon a time in a galaxy far, my friend Tom Emmer and I had a radio show. These days Tom is a US Congressman. Join us for a the first installment reunion podcast in Congressman-Tom-Emmer-Part1-Bob Davis Podcast 873.

Looking Back…Then The Issues

At the top of the list in Part 1 are some fun stories from back in the day and then we get to the issues. After that it gets heavy as we tick off each one of the local and national issues.

It’s All About The Money

One of Emmer’s duties these days is running the republican effort for House races in the 2020 election. Most noteworthy is at least one congressman who lost his bid for reelection in 2018 blamed John McCain and ‘Green Money’ for his loss. It’s all about the money when it comes to these house races. Will there be enough in 2020? Find out in Congressman-Tom-Emmer-Part1-Bob Davis Podcast 873.

Emmer’s Reelection Bid

Moreover as the top republican congressman in the state of Minnesota, what does Emmer’s bid for reelection look like in 2020? One of the issues is whether Emmer has what it takes to disagree with President Trump. For his part, Emmer says he does. In addition he tells a story about how the president reacted to one of his recent votes.

Emmer’s Ok With Trump Being The Issue

As far as issues for 2020 are concerned, first off is the question of what it is like to run in an environment where Trump and Trump’s personality is the issue. Tom makes some predictions for the outcome of the next election that should be noted.

Impeachment Is A Dead End According To Emmer

Second, what about impeachment proceedings? Emmer condemns the democrats saying they’re fabricating evidence and not allowing elected republican officials to see evidence.

The Big Issues…Besides Trump

Even more what issues will candidates be dealing with?

On Health Insurance, Democrats are promoting Single Payer Health. How does Emmer explain the republican plan for Health Insurance Reform?

Part 1 Tees Up Part 2

In conclusion, it’s a good thing Podcasting doesn’t have breaks and you can go on as long as you want. Part 1 only tees us up for Part 2.

Real-Talk-2020-Election-Issues-Bob Davis Podcast 871

Political Chatter

These days there’s a lot of political chatter. We’ll talk about it in Real-Talk-2020-Election-Issues-Bob Davis Podcast 871.

Who the candidates are.

Who’s going to be nominated.

Which ones will win. It seems to change every week.

Not Much Real Talk About Issues

In contrast there hasn’t been a lot of talk about the issues. We’ll do that it in Real-Talk-2020-Election-Issues-Bob Davis Podcast 871.

Our Dream State Of Politics

This podcast opens with a quote about the dreamlike nature of our politics. Then there are the pundits who seem to want to break it down with percentages and numbers. To advocate. The desire is to make a call and tell you who’s going to win.

I won’t do that.

Art Not Science

Politics is more of an art than a science.

Personalities and Partisanship

In 2020 it may come down to personalities and partisanship, not polling and elections data from yesteryear.

Emotions Make Bad Decisions

Moreover I don’t think people driven by emotion, and armed with conspiracy theory, make decisions based on the so called ‘issues’.

Fluid Issues

Issues are also fluid. Killing a famous terrorist changes the fortunes of a president.

In addition so can a series of bad economic numbers or an economic crisis.

One day’s high is the next day’s low.

Long Lists Of Issues

I researched issues. Got long lists of ‘issues’. Certainly many of those ‘issues‘ are included in this podcast. Do they mean anything?

What The Media Is Selling You Already

Will these issues drive the election? That’s what most of the media is selling you.

Not me.

In contrast I’ve picked four key themes I think may have a big impact on what happens in 2020. Let’s not forget we don’t directly elect presidents in the US. We do directly elect congress and our statewide representatives and governors. Those elections are important too.

Themes

In conclusion it’s necessary say again I am not supporting or fighting against any candidate. I am not trying to convince listeners and subscribers we need to move a certain way in this country. You listen. Make your own calls.

State Fair-Anxiety-Relief-Bob Davis Podcast 857

Weather Already Changing

Seems like all the media does these days is react to the President’s Twitter Feed. This creates stress. In Minnesota, the weather is already changing as we head to fall. That means it’s State Fair time. Many Minnesotans head to the state fair for anxiety relief. We’ll talk about it in State Fair-Anxiety-Relief-Bob Davis Podcast 857.

Working At The Fair

I don’t go to the state fair anymore. For me the especially relevant fact is over years I’ve spent hundreds of hours working at the fair. I’ve seen it change from an agriculturally focused event to a food fair.

Millions of Visitors But Not Me

Not that there’s anything wrong with a food fair. If that’s what you’re looking for Minnesota’s State Fair is probably the best in the nation. Moreover, switching to a more urban approach nets the fair hundreds of thousands of visitors per day, for the ten days it’s on.

Lost State Fair Podcast

Back in the day I recorded an audio project with friends at the Minnesota State Fair. A podcast before there were podcasts. I used to do a state fair podcast every year and drop in my ‘lost state fair podcast’, since it less than fifteen minutes long. No need to do that again. If you want to hear the lost state fair podcast, click here.

Freeze Baby

First of all when the weather changes my focus shifts indoors. I am what Minnesotan’s call a ‘freeze baby’. I don’t like being cold. Moreover I already miss the heat and humidity of late July. This year the humidity and heat departed the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes early in August.

Shifting To The Horrible Experience Of Social Media

As a result I am in the studio for State Fair-Anxiety-Relief-Bob Davis Podcast 857, late on a Saturday night. I can’t help but shift from telling some State Fair stories to talking politics and the reaction that subject garners on social media.

Running The Country From Twitter

In addition I single out the media again for seemingly reporting on a twitter feed. These days it feels like all the media does is report on the president’s twitter feed. Consequently we don’t report on outcomes anymore.

Telling Audiences What They Want To Hear

Even more it’s necessary for me to reinforce the fact that I refuse to join the ranks of partisan commentators either predicting the future or telling their audiences what they want to hear.

Focus On Society and Outcomes

As I have been saying, in contrast, my focus is increasingly on society. I am looking for outcomes. Conclusions. Things we can talk about that have some concrete presence in the world. I think the social media experience is increasingly negative, promotes anxiety, and gets us all nowhere.

Play The Game To Find Out Who Wins

In conclusion I refuse to do politician’s work for them. I think they rely too much on media magpies to formulate the explanations and excuses. Sometimes we have to play the game to know the outcome.

Cheese Curds and Something On A Stick

Finally sometimes it’s just good to take a pause at the end of the summer for some cheese curds and something on a stick.
