I think it’s most noteworthy that I have not bloviated on medical and statistical explanations the way some media charlatans have. On the other hand I will share some stories.

In conclusion the second half of this podcast explores some of the details about the spread of Coronavirus and the potential economic effects. One of the things I’ve noticed is despite the tools we have, many people are at a loss when it comes to fact checking what is being said.

Opinions Are Suddenly Frightening and Dangerous

Consequently one wonders whether people in this country will ever be able to hear an opinion they don’t agree with, without being ‘triggered‘, or thinking there’s an international conspiracy against them.

What’s A Mother To Do?

Certainly users can block, mute or unfollow unsavory characters and people they don’t agree with.

However this isn’t enough.

Gag Them! Shun Them! How Dare People Express Opinions I Do Not Agree With!

As the result of their crimes, offenders must be gagged. Even more, permanently prevented from having their say. This is the corporate version of free speech, backed by a roiling mob.

Try Banning The Backlash

Finally the real truth is you can ban someone from expressing their opinions or entertaining, but you can’t ban the backlash. Sooner or later competitors to these companies will emerge. Content Creators will find other platforms.

In conclusion and in defense of Facebook, getting them to let me advertise podcasts has been clunky and frustrating…

Not impossible.

Moreover some of the worst trolls hide behind anonymity. In this sense, I can understand why ‘registration’ and ‘authentication’ is now part of the process for media businesses on some platforms.

No Longer A Democracy

There will be challenges to  gaggings. Some of those challenges will be based on the first amendment and perhaps equal protection clauses of the fourteenth amendment.

And there should be.

I may not agree with your crazy conspiracy theory or your opinion, but I defend your right to tell the world about it.

Without free speech, we are no longer a democracy or if you prefer a representative republic.

THAT is truly terrifying.

Trump Loves Bombshells and So Does The Media

Moreover when it’s a bombshell that triggers uproar from all sides of the so called political spectrum, it’s news.

All About Trump

The president has been talking about declaring an emergency for weeks. In addition there have been rumors his unhappiness with a legislative compromise that netted only about one fifth of what he wanted for his ‘big beautiful wall’ on the southern US border. It’s been a spectacle. It’s about to become a most noteworthy example of a political dumpster fire.

Can He Really Do That?

Especially relevant is the question of whether the president can actually declare an emergency to build a border wall. Obviously the Administration thinks so. There are currently thirty states of emergency already declared by presidents going back to Jimmy Carter. This will be number 31. We’ll talk about in United States-Emergency-Spectacle-Bob Davis Podcast 807.

All About The Approval Rating

There will be court challenges and lots of and lots of news coverage. Here’s the thing. Immigration and the border wall is a good issue for the president. Already some polls have his approval rating over fifty percent. As to whether a wall will actually work? I guess that remains to be seen.

Big Spending Big Government Republicans

Lost in the shuffle is a new budget bill that substantially increases federal spending. With the national debt at 22 trillion and more than 100 percent of the nation’s GDP you could call Trump President Donald Baines Nixon. With this spending bill you could call him Donald Barack Trump. (Editor’s Note: I refer to the debt of the US as the Budget Deficit which is probably somewhere around half a trillion. The 22 trillion dollar figure is in actuality the total debt of the US, currently at about 105 percent of the country’s GDP).
