Financial Strain

Secondly someone needs to explain some facts as our financial system faces significant financial strain.

Most importantly this is as close as I’ll ever be to discussing politics.

Causes

However I am limiting myself to talking about what’s causing this financial strain.

No Picnic

Certainly what Americans are experiencing right now is no picnic.

Nomads are no exception.

Options

But we do have some options folks back home may not have.

Mobile

Importantly we’re mobile.

Free Camping

Even more we camp for free.

Fuel Prices Slowing My Roll

On the other hand the high cost of fuel has certainly slowed my roll.

And everyone else out here in the land of the nomad.

Stress Anyone?

Meanwhile a majority of Americans say they are under a great deal of stress right now.

A Mix Of Bad News

To clarify we’ve had a pandemic. Inflation has already made food, fuel and rent more expensive. And throw the Ukraine situation into the mix.

That’s a lot of stress.

But as a the result of hitting the road stress is a little easier for me to manage right now.

What’s Next?

Most importantly what happens next?

Financial Stress

Firstly our financial system is under a lot of stress

Stagflation

Stagflation is a concern.

Inflation

Inflation is ravaging all of us.

Deflation

On the other hand the cure for high prices may eventually be high prices.

No To Higher Prices

Even more I don’t think we can accept prices this high and eventually we will reject them.

Recession Ahead

That is to say eventually high prices effect demand to the point where an economic recession develops.

Certainly some economists think we’re nearing that point.

Weird Tension In The World

Above all with the situation in the Ukraine and Eastern Europe getting more tense by the day I feel like we have to take certain steps to protect ourselves. Details in World-Gone-Crazy-Bob Davis Podcast 1044.

Not Easy

Finally these aren’t easy times.

Secondly we should be suspicious of a media with a penchant for predicting the future.

More importantly I have avoided partisan criticism of the president. In addition I have refused to engage in the same kind of misinformation when it comes to potential presidential candidates. Now you understand why.

No Partisan Issue Advocacy Here Either

Moreover I refuse to advocate for partisan issues or tell listeners and subscribers what to think.

Therefore I am starting my political coverage of presidential polling for 2020.

To clarify from time to time I will do some podcasts discussing recent polling on a state by state basis.

All About The Electoral Vote

Even more we choose our presidents through the electoral college. We do not vote directly for the office of president in the United States.This reality forces presidential campaigns to develop electoral strategies.

Divided? Really?

Above all we keep hearing how the United States has become a ‘divided’ country. It’s the Blue States against the Red States.

County By County Vote Totals

But county by county vote totals show the votes are often ‘blue’ or ‘red’ by pluralities, not majorities.

National Presidential Polls Are Useless

Finally citing national popularity polls, presidential job approval polls, or even national political preference is little more than a waste of time.

Another Close Contest, So Far…

In conclusion, the 2020 presidential race at this time looks like another close contest. Unless that reality changes it’s going to come down to some key states.

Still Not A Lot Of Polling Data For Battleground States

Meanwhile polling data is not available for all the so called battleground states.

Fantasy Reporting

In short don’t believe everything you hear.

(Editor’s Note: I refer to both candidates running as ‘presidents’. Obviously I meant President Trump and former Vice President Biden. In addition at the time of recording of this podcast  results of the Iowa US Senate Primary had not been released. Due to this, no polls were available on the race. The primary was held on June 2nd, 2020. I said no democrat had yet been selected in the Iowa US Senate Race, which includes Senator Joni Ernst as the republican incumbent. This was true at the time. Now Ernst has a democratic opponent. For the results go here.)

We’re in uncharted waters due to the pandemic. No nation has ever brought its economy to full stop in such a short period of time.

Biggest Reduction In Economic Growth Ever

Even more major banks are predicting at least a 25 percent reduction in US output in the first quarter.

Bigger Than The Great Depression

This is unprecedented even in the darkest days of the Great Depression back in the 1930’s.

What’s Done Is Done

While we can ask whether this was a good idea, what’s done is done.

Seems like people think you can ‘hit pause’. Come back in thirty, sixty, ninety or one hundred twenty days. Hit ‘play’ and everything will be fine.

Real Life

But above all, this is real life. Even though it seems like we’re in a movie, we’re not.

We May Not Be Able To Easily Restart

Economies may not start easily once they are shut down. Moreover the central banks have been running very loose monetary policies for years. I’ve done a lot of podcasts about this. What About Actions Government Has Taken?

As a result of ordered lock downs the government has taken action in the last week or so.

Interest Rates Slashed

The federal reserve slashed interest rates twice. The effective interest rate is now zero.

Another 2 Trillion of Relief On The Way

A 2 trillion dollar relief package is working its way through congress.

One Thousand Dollar Checks

We’re all supposed to get one thousand dollar a month checks as needed.

Why Are They Doing This?

Certainly there’s a reason for all of this. It has to do with what a depression is and what causes it. I’ll explain it in Will-Corona-Quarantine-Cause-Depression?-Bob Davis Podcast 913. Are we there yet? Time will tell.

Making It Better…Or Worse

Finally in the end economists and policy makers will sift through whatever wreckage is left and tell us whether the measures taken now made things better or worse.

Short Deep Recession or Depression

In conclusion whether we have a short and deep recession or a world wide economic disaster known as a depression depends on what our leaders do now.
