Summer Is Short Up Here

First of all summer in the upper Midwest is short. We all know that, right? Join me on a midnight walk and talk as the heat hangs in the balance in Fading-Midwestern-Summer-Walk-Talk-Bob Davis Podcast 945.

Walk and Talk Time

More importantly these occasional walk and talk podcasts are necessary.

Making Sense Of This Crazy World

Secondly every now and then I have to take the podcast machine out for some free association. It helps me make sense of the crazy world we’re living in.

Recent Podcasts

Even more late night walks serve to integrate some of the heavier podcasts I’ve done recently.

Lots of Feeds In July! Thank You!

Certainly July had some podcasts that garnered pretty solid download numbers.

Facebook’s Civil War

For example my podcast on Facebook’s diabolical approach to sowing disagreement and discord. In addition a podcast I did at the beginning of July on the economic situation.

Ahead Of The Curve

Above all my goal is to give podcast listeners and subscribers information they might not be aware of. And to give people something to think about a little ahead of the curve.

Summer Storms

In short I find investigating and commenting on ‘news’ that seems to blow up and disappear like a summer storm isn’t worth my attention, or yours.

Three Big Story Lines In August

So in Fading-Midwestern-Summer-Walk-Talk-Bob Davis Podcast 945 I outline the three big story lines I think we can pay attention to in the month of August.

Fair Time!

In conclusion in my part of the world we have something called The Minnesota State Fair. The fair is a ritual that helps us process the end of summer.

Weather Change

Finally the weather changes and you get ready for fall.

Cancel Culture

Unfortunately the fair has been cancelled, so it’s hard for us all to figure out what time of the year it is!

Surreal Summer

To sum up it has been a surreal summer. True, we have a few weeks left. In fact there are predictions of the return of heat before it’s all over. But I can’t imagine fall will be any less surreal.

(Photo Editor Note: On the river in Minneapolis. A stark difference from the usual photos and press regarding our troubles in Minneapolis. A night spent with people who care about their home and their community. Thanks guys for the opportunity to get that shot!)

2017 Solar Eclipse Point of Totality Part 1-Podcast 657

Seeing a full solar eclipse is an amazing experience. This was not an easy trip. It was not a short trip. There will be two parts to the eclipse podcast. The night before. The Day Of. We’ll start with the night before the solar eclipse in 2017 Solar Eclipse Point of Totality Part 1-Podcast 657.

Long Wait For This One

A long time ago my best friend Steve and I set up telescopes and special projection devices in his back yard for an annular solar eclipse. We decided to recreate that experience in 2017 for this very nearly one-of-kind eclipse. Traveling down Illinois 1 all the way south to the Carbondale, Illinois area.

Searching For Totality

We’d heard this was the point of totality. That is, a line across the US where the eclipse would be total. We didn’t realize how lucky we were until we discovered we had landed in Makanda, Illinois. Find out why this is important in 2017 Solar Eclipse Point of Totality Part 1-Podcast 657.

Sometimes You Luck Out

Two guys in an ambulance. Not really an RV. Primitive sleeping arrangements. A tent for Steve. Hammock inside Mobile Podcast Command for me. We rolled into a camping area. Asked some questions. Learned it was a specific place, which cost a lot more than what we thought initially.

Travel and Adventure Means Meeting Great Random People

Traveling you meet random people. Sometimes it’s good. In this case we meet Bud, who arranged for this park, in this town, for this eclipse. He turns out to be an historian, a businessman and a good guy. He joins us for 2017 Solar Eclipse Point of Totality Part 1-Podcast 657.

Part II On The Way

Heading back to the Chicago area as I write this. Part II will be up as soon as possible. As a teaser to that podcast I will simply say I have heard a lot of people say, “I’ll watch the eclipse on TV”. With all my equipment and all of Steve’s telescopes and cameras, ham radios and special glasses, this is something you just have to experience. It was amazing. More on that later.

See You in 2024

The good news? Another eclipse goes right through Makanda in 2024.

Podcast 554-Latest Election State By State Polls

Podcast 554-Latest Election State By State Polls. For you political junkies, which includes me, it’s been a month since the last analysis of political polls state by state, and I promised another one at the end of September, 2016. If you want to compare the two state by state poll podcasts to really get a sense of movement check out Podcast 541. I do not intend to analyze the debate. I will not tell you who won the debate. I will not tell you whether people pay attention to the debates. None of the current state by state polls were taken after the debates so they do not reflect the effects on either candidate of the debates. With this in mind, over 80 million people watched the September 26th debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The next state-by-state poll roundup podcast at the end of October will show what effect – if any – the debates may or may not have had. The biggest change between this podcast and the podcast in late August is that there are now more ‘toss up’ states — that is states with poll averages for president within the margin of error. In Podcast 554-State By State Polls, I am drawing on data from Real Clear Politics. Follow the link directly to an interactive electoral map of the United States and follow along, or may your own map. The tightening could be knock on effects from Clinton’s bad week of September 11th, or it could just be due to more polls closer to the election, when respondents start paying attention and are more likely to give responses. You’ll have to listen for my conclusions about whether more toss up states mean anything, but for the most part, both candidates are within the margins in 2012 and 2008 in the states they lead, or are trading leads. The big questions remain Florida, Ohio, Pennsyvania, Virginia, and to a lesser extent North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, and western states like Colorado, Arizona and Nevada. This is a state by state electoral election, so the national polls don’t matter, and the snap polls on who won the debate don’t matter. All that matters is the candidate’s performance, and get out the vote efforts for them in key electoral states. Listen and learn the state by state strongholds, battlegrounds, advantages and disadvantages, roughly a month out. We’ll come back at the end of October and again just before the election in early November, and see how the campaigning, media, and news events have changed the political landscape.
